Patent number: 9217827Abstract: An optical waveguide arrangement is provided which comprises an active ridge waveguide structure 12 formed by etching of a semiconductor substrate 1, 2, 3. There is also provided an auxiliary waveguide-like structure 8 formed on the substrate adjacent the active ridge waveguide structure 12 to control the etched profile of the active waveguide structure. The arrangement of the auxiliary structure 8 on the substrate controls the etched profile over the cross-section of the active waveguide structure 12 and along the length of the active waveguide structure 12. Advantageously, this arrangement reduces or eliminates the disadvantages associated with etch-process induced asymmetries in the shape of closely spaced waveguides.Type: GrantFiled: November 11, 2011Date of Patent: December 22, 2015Assignee: OCLARO TECHNOLOGY LIMITEDInventors: Stephen K. Jones, Peter J. Williams

Patent number: 6484247Abstract: A system and method for storage and retrieval of objects. The objects are stored on a permanent medium in a manner to allow for fast recovery of the objects from the medium. The objects are stored in a format that is structurally equivalent to the format of the objects on a volatile medium, such as memory of a general-purpose computer. Objects are stored according to a data relationship with other objects. The objects may be stored as a stream of objects and offset references. Offset references are converted to actual memory addresses as objects are retrieved into the volatile medium.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1999Date of Patent: November 19, 2002Assignee: Intellution, Inc.Inventors: Robert F. Gendron, Stephen K. Jones

Patent number: 6307836Abstract: A system, method and computer program product are described, by which a user, through a control interface in a subscriber interface device, requests from network intelligence both transport network bandwidth and type of service line mode as part of call setup. An improved system by which requests to change access line mode and bandwidth are communicated over transmission facilities via D channels through local switch fabric to local or remote network intelligence is detailed. Connections over the transmission facilities, established between user B channels and B channels of transport bandwidth or between user B channels and the Stat Mux function, are described. An improved system is summarized, in which connections directly to transport bandwidth support point-to-point n B+D upstream and m B+D downstream service, and connections via stat mux allow connectionless traffic to share a portion of the transport bandwidth on an as needed basis.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1997Date of Patent: October 23, 2001Assignee: MCI Communications CorporationInventors: Stephen K. Jones, Richard L. Kellerman

Patent number: 5469993Abstract: A dispensing system comprising a container for containing a liquid to be dispensed, a sprayer comprising a spray head and a handle, and flexible tubing connectable at one of its ends to the container and connected at its other end to the sprayer for conveying liquid from the container to the sprayer. The container has a recess formed in one of its side walls sized and shaped for receiving the sprayer, and connectors for attaching the sprayer to the container with the sprayer received within the recess. The sprayer is detachable from the container for dispensing liquid from the container.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 1993Date of Patent: November 28, 1995Assignee: Monsanto CompanyInventors: Barry W. Hauf, Stephen K. Jones, Joseph E. Johnson, Jr., Roger L. Paquin

Patent number: 5363483Abstract: A computer display system and technique in which display area is represented as an array of regions, and a record is maintained for each object displayed in the area to identify the regions occupied by the object. When an event occurs that causes a change in the information presented in the display area, the regions that are affected by the change are detected, and an object is updated if its record identifies at least one of the affected regions. Examples of such events include the appearance and removal of dialog boxes, pull-down menus, and other items that may obscure the objects when displayed, and changes in the display characteristics (e.g., color) of the objects.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1992Date of Patent: November 8, 1994Assignee: Intellution, Inc.Inventors: Stephen K. Jones, Joseph J. Rzepiejewski, Paul J. Vanslette

Patent number: 5240787Abstract: An adapter for converting multiple electrochemical cells into a desired battery configuration, in particular D size cells into a lantern battery configuration. The adapter is a one piece receptacle structure with a hinged section openable for removal and replacement of spent cells. The adapter further contains a one-piece conductive member, comprised of a substrate with conductive elements, for electrical interconnection of all of the cells with each other and with the external electrical terminals of the adapter. The one-piece conductive member permits the inserted cells to be aligned in a single direction.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 1991Date of Patent: August 31, 1993Assignee: Duracell Inc.Inventors: Willfred Goldschmidt, Stephen K. Jones, Richard A. Rowley

Patent number: 5205793Abstract: A pulley is described for hauling strands of rope or chain and for engaging a splice coupling a strand of rope to a strand of chain. A plurality of pockets are arranged about the periphery of the pulley for positively engaging every other chain link. A plurality of pairs of rope-engaging surfaces are located between adjacent pockets and within the pockets. Rope and chain occupy substantially the same diameter of the pulley resulting in substantially the same speed and torque characteristics whether rope or chain is being hauled.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 1991Date of Patent: April 27, 1993Assignee: Campbell Hausfeld/Scott Fetzer CompanyInventor: Stephen K. Patent number: 5037657Abstract: The rate of disintegration and/or dissolution of effervescent acetylsalicylic acid tablets obtained by direct compression of a dry powder mixture is surprisingly increased by incorporating in said mixture powdered dextrose and/or sucrose. Preferably, spray-crystallized dextrose is used.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1990Date of Patent: August 6, 1991Assignee: Nicholas Kiwi Pty LimitedInventors: Stephen K. Jones, Peter D. Wilson

Patent number: 4507794Abstract: A system for digital transmission includes an active pulse forming network to convert a digital data signal into a Manchester Coded PSK format. A low pass filter network is provided to transform the Manchester Coded signal for transmission over a bandlimited wireline channel. The receiver includes a low pass filter and a bandpass filter that combine to form an overall bandpass filter response for receiving the output of the wireline channel. The transmitter low pass filter and the receiver bandpass filter combine to transform the Manchester Coded PSK data signal into a quasi-raised cosine signal that has the digital data signal coded therein. A timing recovery circuit is included that extracts a timing signal from the quasi-raised cosine signal to provide a coherent timing signal such that the quasi-raised cosine signal can be sampled and the digital data signal reconstructed.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 1983Date of Patent: March 26, 1985Inventors: Stephen K. Jones, Donald A. Johnston
