  • Patent number: 11865629
Abstract: A rotary cutting tool includes a shank portion, a cutting portion, and a cutting tip. The cutting portion includes a plurality of blades and a plurality of flutes. Each blade includes a leading face, a trailing face, and a land surface extending between the leading face and the trailing face. The cutting end includes an end cutting edge having a first end face cutting edge portion formed with a positive, neutral or negative radial angle, a positive dish angle and a negative axial rake angle, and second end face cutting edge portion formed with a highly positive radial angle, a positive dish angle and a negative axial rake angle. The highly positive radial angle of the second end face cutting edge portion enables the rotary cutting tool to perform a ramp operation at very large ramp angles of between about 15-45 degrees.

  • Publication number: 20120295519
Abstract: A method of making a cutting tap includes the steps of: grinding a blank to form a threaded body portion at an axially forward end of the cutting tap, grinding one or more flutes in the threaded body portion to form cutting edges; grinding the threaded body portion to form a first cutting thread and a second cutting thread, the first cutting thread at a first distance from the axially forward end of the cutting tap, and the second cutting thread at a second distance from the axially forward end of the cutting tap; and grinding a chamfer in the threaded body portion such that a thickness of a section of material removed from the second cutting thread is smaller than a thickness of a section of material removed from the first cutting thread during a tapping operation.

  • Patent number: 8210779
Abstract: A cutting tap includes a body having an axial forward end and an axial rearward end and a central longitudinal axis. The body has a fluted section at the axial forward end. The fluted section includes a chamfered fluted section extending from the axial forward end of the body and terminating at a first full cutting thread. The chamfered fluted section includes a first cutting thread located a first distance from the axial forward end of the body, and a second cutting thread located a second distance from the axial forward end of the body. The second distance is greater than the first distance. The chamfered fluted section is shaped such that a thickness of a section of material removed by the second cutting thread is smaller than a thickness of a section of material removed by the first cutting thread. A method of making the cutting tap is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7832966
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a helical drill configuration that allows substantially flat bottomed holes to be machined. At the cutting end of the body member, there are at least two cutting edges that are symmetrically oriented on opposing sides of the rotational axis of the drill. In an embodiment of the invention, first and second cutting edge portions form a continuous surface which provides strength and tool stability. The height of the second portions of each of the cutting edges remains relatively consistent along the horizontal for formation of a generally flat bottom hole. In the embodiment, a center point is defined by two sloped peak surfaces. A central straight chisel edge is formed by the intersection of the two sloped peak surfaces. The first cutting edge section extends from the chisel edge to the second cutting edge section. The first cutting edge section for both cutting edges is formed by symmetrically thinning the two peak surface.
