Abstract: An implant extraction device and method are provided that are designed for the direct anterior approach method of hip implant removal. The device includes a proximal end having a first aperture for receiving the neck of a femoral implant, and a second aperture through which a clamp shaft is delivered on an axis approximately perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the first aperture. An arcuate column extends from the proximal end. The shape of the arcuate column effectively orients the extraction device and an attachable impaction frame relative to one another such that the force applied to the frame to remove the implant is essentially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the hip implant, thus minimizing the likelihood of damage to the femur bone caused by excessive or unbalanced forces.
