  • Patent number: 8299756
Abstract: A system and method are provided for battery control of hybrid vehicles such as, but not limited to, hybrid locomotives. The system and method are implemented to sense a present state of charge (SoC) of one or more batteries and generate present SoC data there from, sense a present excursion defined by a relationship represented as maximum SoC?minimum SoC for a desired cycle and generate present excursion data there from, and control the one or more battery power/current charging limits in response to the present SoC data and the present excursion data.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 1, 2007
Date of Patent: October 30, 2012
    Assignee: General Electric Company
Inventors: Monika Chawla, Amol Rajaram Kolwalkar, Ajit Wasant Kane, Ajith Kuttannair Kumar, Stephen Matthew Pelkowski, Lembit Salasoo

  • Patent number: 7296978
Abstract: A compressed air system and method of operating the system wherein the slip between the compressor motor and its powering alternator is used as an indication of whether the compressor is running in a loaded or unloaded mode. A slip parameter such as % Slip is determined and compared to an allowable value in real time. If the compressor is determined to be erroneously in a loaded mode, a corrective action may be taken to reduce the probability that the motor is later started with the compressor still in the loaded mode.

  • Patent number: 7131614
Abstract: The invention includes a system and method for managing an operation of a locomotive as a function of a location of the locomotive. The system comprises a location unit for determining the location of the locomotive and a control unit for controlling an operation of the locomotive as a function of the determined location. In another embodiment, the invention includes a system and method for receiving a security authorization input from an operator of the locomotive, comparing the received operator security authorization input to a security authorization parameter, and restricting an operation of the locomotive when the received operator security authorization input does not match the security authorization parameter. In yet another embodiment, the invention includes a system and method of sending a control command from a remote system, receiving the control command at the locomotive, and controlling an operation of the locomotive responsive to the received control command.

  • Patent number: 7118348
Abstract: A compressed air system, wherein a decision to de-energize a compressor motor is made with consideration of the likely need for the operation of the compressor at a future point in time. A rate of pressure decay in an air reservoir may be extrapolated over a predetermined time period to predict the need for operation of the compressor within the time period. If operation of the compressor is predicted to be needed within the time period, the compressor is allowed to continue to run in an unloaded mode beyond a normal cool down period.

  • Patent number: 6367891
Abstract: An apparatus for determining the direction of locomotive travel while in dynamic braking is disclosed. This direction of travel is derived from current sensors associated with the locomotive traction motors. When in the dynamic braking mode, current flows through the current sensors in a first direction when a train is traveling in the first direction and reverses the direction of flow when the train is traveling in a second direction.
