  • Patent number: 9726149
Abstract: A ram air turbine (RAT) assembly includes a gearbox that supports a gear set with a ring gear that drives a pinion gear. The gear set provides for the transmission of power from the turbine to a generator, pump or other power conversion device. A turbine shaft supports the ring gear and a pinion shaft that rotates about an axis transverse to the turbine shaft supports the pinion gear. A ratio between a face width and a diametrical pitch of the gear set is within a desired ratio that provides sufficient space for supporting bearing assemblies while providing for operation within the physical constraints and desired performance requirements of the RAT.

  • Publication number: 20160122034
Abstract: A ram air turbine movable between a stowed position and a deployed position is provided including a rotatable hub assembly. A hub face is arranged at a first end of the rotatable hub assembly. The hub face has a non-planar configuration such that a limited portion of a surface area of the hub face is arranged within a plane oriented perpendicular to a direction of travel of an airflow upstream from the hub face when the ram air turbine is in a deployed position.

  • Patent number: 9188105
Abstract: A driveshaft for an aircraft ram air turbine includes a substantially cylindrical elongate portion, a first end extending from the elongate portion, and a second end extending from the elongate portion opposite the first end. The first and second ends each include a substantially frusto-conical section having a curved generatrix, such that distal portions of each of the first and second ends have smaller outer diameters than an outer diameter of the elongate portion. The elongate portion provides relatively high lateral stiffness and the first and second ends provide relatively low torsional stiffness, such that the driveshaft has a lateral natural frequency higher than an operating range of the driveshaft and has a torsional natural frequency below the operating range of the driveshaft.

  • Patent number: 8622697
Abstract: A ram air turbine assembly includes a spacer that controls axial movement of a bearing assembly supporting rotation of a driven shaft to limit compression of a bearing biasing member. A gearbox includes mating gears that transfer power through a strut to a generator. Bearings support rotation of the driven shaft and the biasing member generates a biasing load to maintain desired alignment between the mating gears. Axial thrust reversals generated during operation are prevented from fully compressing the biasing member by a spacer that defines a minimum compressed height and that further limits axial movement of the bearing assembly responsive to the thrust reversals of the driven shaft.

  • Publication number: 20120269616
Abstract: A driveshaft for an aircraft ram air turbine includes a tubular body and a flange. The tubular body defines an axis of rotation and includes a forward portion and a frusto-conical portion located rearward of the forward portion. The flange adjoins the forward portion of the tubular body opposite the frusto-conical portion, and has a forward face and an opposite rear face. A ratio of an outer diameter of the forward portion of the tubular body to an inner diameter of the forward portion of the tubular body is in a range of approximately 1.423 to 1.425.

  • Publication number: 20120011953
Abstract: A ram air turbine gearbox includes a pinion shaft arranged in a housing and operatively supports a pinion gear. An input shaft is arranged in the housing and operatively supports a ring gear coupled to the pinion gear. The input and output shafts are oriented at an angle. A rolling element bearing supports the pinion shaft in the housing and includes inner and outer races between which a multiple ball bearings are arranged. Each ball includes a ball diameter. The inner and outer races respectively include inner and outer raceway radii and inner and outer raceway depths. The inner and outer raceway radii each are approximately 52% of the ball diameter. The inner raceway depth is at a minimum 25% of the ball diameter, and the outer raceway depth is at a minimum 20% of the ball diameter.
