    Abstract: A surface examination assembly for examining surface contours by detecting nd recording surface contour data including profile data to determine the existence of variations of the surface from design specifications, and to determine the existence of structural degradation as indicated by surface contour changes includes a mounting frame for holding the assembly elements and for mounting the assembly on or near the surface to be examined, a probe arm adjustable mounted on the frame by means of a slide block, the slide block permitting movement of the probe arm in both a vertical and a horizontal position relative to the frame, a recording device for use with a recording medium mounted on the frame, the recording device being operatively engaged with the probe arm and moveable in response thereto to permit contour and profile data detected by the probe arm to be transmitted through the recording device to the recording medium.

    Abstract: An apparatus is provided for sealing the pressure side opening of a gate ve body which includes a pair of plates and a device for joining the plates for lateral and pivotal movements with respect to one another. A device is associated with the outside edge of one of the plates for engaging the nonpressure side of the gate valve and another device is associated with the outside edge of the other plate for sealing the pressure side opening of the gate valve. Each plate has a top camming surface and a bottom camming surface with the top camming surfaces of the plates being angled toward one another and the bottom camming surfaces of the plates being angled toward one another. A device engages the top and bottom camming surfaces of the plates for laterally spreading the plates so that the sealing device can be forced into sealing engagement with the pressure side opening of the gate valve body.

    Abstract: An in situ machine is provided for refurbishing a bore in a workpiece. The achine includes a shaft which is adapted to be fixed to the workpiece in axial alignment therewith. A tubular boring element is concentrically mounted for rotation about the fixed shaft and is adapted to extend into the workpiece bore. A cutting head is slidably mounted on the boring element for reciprocable movement therealong. A device is provided for rotating the boring element and cutting means, and another device, which is responsive to the rotating device, is provided for advancing the cutting head along the boring element.

    Abstract: A machine is provided for in-situ grinding of tapered lugs on a hatch, such s a hatch aboard a submarine. A base is provided and a device is attached to alternate lugs of the hatch for mounting the base across the hatch opening. An elongated plate is mounted at its center to the base for pivotal movement thereon. The pivotal plate has opposite ends wherein each end is extendable between a pair of alternate lugs, one of the lugs between one of the pair of lugs being a lug to be ground. A device is mounted on the base for oscillating the pivotal plate back and forth between the lugs of each pair of alternate lugs. A grinder is provided, and a device is utilized for mounting the grinder at one end of the pivotal plate for selectively engaging the grinder with or backing the grinder away from the lug to be ground. With this arrangement a lug can be ground by oscillating the pivotal plate and engaging the grinding means with the lug.

    Abstract: A turning apparatus, intended to be mounted on a work shaft for in-place ting, may include a pair of mounting rings which are attachable to the shaft and which support a longitudinal annulate frame assembly which rotates about the area to be cut. A drive assembly is mounted on a mounting ring and engages a ring gear attached to the frame assembly for providing it rotational force. A longitudinal track assembly is mounted on and extends between the ends of the frame assembly. A carriage assembly is slidably mounted on the track assembly and is in operational engagement with a lead screw which is also mounted on the track assembly. The carriage assembly is adapted to hold a cutter for machining the shaft surface as the frame assembly rotates. A hydraulic indexing device incrementally rotates the lead screw in synchronism with the rotation of the frame assembly to move the carriage assembly and the cutter along the axis of the work piece.

    Abstract: A vertical drive mechanism is provided for a cutting apparatus. The cutting pparatus can be used for in place machining of a valve seat which may include an annular turntable adapted to be rotatably mounted on the valve above the valve seat. A feed shaft is mounted through the turntable so as to be rotatable therewith, and a bottom of the feed shaft is adapted to receive a cutter for machining the valve seat. The vertical drive mechanism is mounted on the feed shaft and includes a nut threaded on the feed shaft and a gear combination. The gear combination may include a first portion which is fixedly connected to the nut, a second portion which operatively engages the first gear portion, and a third portion which operatively engages the second gear portion, the third gear portion being mounted for rotatable slidable friction engagement about the nut.

    Abstract: Properly aligned threaded or smooth bores are machined in a pipe boss fla without requiring supplementary staging or makeshift rigs. An expandable holding sleeve is inserted in the throat of the pipe and a mounting unit is brought to rest on the outer surface of the pipe boss flange. A holding sleeve is expanded to engage the pipe and a bracket grips a projection from the mounting unit at a predetermined angular rotation while an extension of the bracket ensures a perpendicular orientation. A vertical feed mechanism mounted on the bracket directs a motor driven drill assembly through holes located in the mounting plate. After the holes and threads are machined in the pipe boss flange, the expandable sleeve is loosened and the unit is removed at a minimal time and effort expenditure.

    Abstract: An apparatus for machining pipe ends which includes an annular housing wh is adapted to receive a pipe end. A plurality of rods are threaded radially through the housing and are adjustable inwardly for engaging the pipe so as to enable axial alignment of the housing with the pipe end. A chuck is slidably mounted within the cylindrical housing for longitudinal reciprocal movement toward and away from the pipe end. The chuck is also rotatably mounted within the housing. A large nut may be threaded on the housing for positioning and retaining the chuck at selected locations along the longitudinal axis of the housing. One or more tool bits are located at one end of the chuck for machining the end of the pipe when the chuck is rotated within the housing.
