Patent number: 9032646Abstract: An energy return shoe system has a shoe portion, a flexible lower sole portion and a toe mechanism. The toe mechanism has an upper toe plate, a lower toe plate, and at least two toe arms. The upper toe plate is affixed to the shoe portion, the lower toe plate is affixed to the lower sole, and the toe arms are pivotally affixed at ends to the upper toe plate and the lower toe plate and are substantially parallel to each other. The lower sole is made of a flexible material and there is at least one spring mechanism that urges the shoe portion away from the lower sole. As the wearer steps down, energy of the wearer's mass is stored in one or more spring devices and as the wearer begins to lift their foot, the stored energy is returned to help push that foot off the ground.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2012Date of Patent: May 19, 2015Inventor: Stephen Perenich

Patent number: 8627582Abstract: An energy-return shoe system includes a shoe portion having a sole. The sole has a toe area and a heel area. The sole is capable of bending at a point between the toe area and the heel area. A lower sole has a toe area and a heel area and is bendable at a point between the toe area and the heel area. A heel mechanism interfaces the shoe heel area to the lower sole heel area and holds the shoe heel sole area in horizontal synchronization with the lower heel sole area thereby maintaining a same horizontal position between the heel areas and allowing front and rear ends of the heel areas to close and open at the same rate. A spring or other device pushes the heel areas away from each other, thereby absorbing energy upon impact and releasing the energy on step-off.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 2011Date of Patent: January 14, 2014Inventor: Stephen Perenich

Patent number: 8627583Abstract: An energy-return shoe system includes a shoe portion. A shaft runs longitudinally along a lower sole and the shaft is rotatable along its axis. A mechanical interface between the shaft and the shoe portion keeps the shoe portion in horizontal synchronization with the shaft, thereby shoe portion maintains horizontal position with respect to the shaft and a forward set of points on each of the shoe portion and the shaft converge and diverge to and from each other at the same rate as a rearward set of points on each of the shoe portion and the shaft.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2011Date of Patent: January 14, 2014Inventor: Stephen Perenich

Patent number: 7950166Abstract: A simplified energy-return shoe system includes an energy-return shoe system is disclosed including a shoe portion for containing a user's foot with an upper sole having an upper toe sole area and an upper heel sole area. The upper sole is affixed to a bottom surface of the shoe portion and the upper sole is bendable at a point between the upper toe sole area and the upper heel sole area. A lower sole has a lower toe sole area and a lower heel sole area. The lower sole is bendable at a point between the lower toe sole area and the lower heel sole area. A heel suspension mechanism links the upper heel sole area to the lower heel sole area whereas the upper heel sole area is held in a parallel relationship to the lower heel sole area and the upper heel sole is allowed to move backwards in relationship to the lower heel sole. A device such as a spring is provided for pushing the upper heel sole area away from the lower heel sole area.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 2007Date of Patent: May 31, 2011Inventor: Stephen Perenich

Patent number: 7913422Abstract: An energy-return shoe system includes a shoe portion with an upper plate affixed to its bottom surface. A shaft runs longitudinally along a lower sole and the shaft is rotatable along its axis. Hinges interface between the upper plate and the shaft. At least two of the hinges close in a first direction and at least one of the hinges close in the opposite direction. Each of the hinges has a first hinge arm connected to a second hinge arm by a middle pivot. A distal end of the first hinge arm is pivotally connected to the upper plate and a distal end of the second hinge arm is pivotally connected to the shaft.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 2007Date of Patent: March 29, 2011Inventor: Stephen Perenich

Patent number: 7905033Abstract: An energy-return shoe system includes a shoe portion for containing a foot, with an upper sole on a bottom surface of the shoe part. The upper sole has an upper toe sole area and an upper heel sole area. The upper sole is capable of bending at a point between the upper toe sole area and the upper heel sole area. A lower sole has a lower toe sole area and a lower heel sole area, also capable of bending at a point between the lower toe sole area and the lower heel sole area. A compressible heel mechanism interfaces the upper heel sole area to the lower heel sole area so that the upper heel sole area is held parallel to the lower heel sole area and the upper heel sole area is held in a same horizontal position with respect to the lower heel sole area. A spring pushes the upper heel sole area away from the lower heel sole area, thereby absorbing energy upon impact and releasing the energy on step-off.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 2007Date of Patent: March 15, 2011Inventor: Stephen Perenich
