  • Patent number: 9346964
    Abstract: A water-based paint composition may include at least one mineral treated with at least one hydrophobizing agent. The at least one mineral may include at least one of clay, kaolin, mica, titanium dioxide, talc, natural or synthetic silica or silicates, feldspars, nepheline syenite, talc, wollastonite, diatomite, barite, glass, and calcium carbonate. The at least one hydrophobizing agent may include at least one of fatty acids, fatty amines, and silanes. A method of making water-based paint may include treating at least one mineral with a hydrophobizing agent, and combining the at least one treated mineral with a binder.

  • Publication number: 20070161736
    Abstract: A composition comprising pulverized hydrous kaolins having a particle size distribution meeting the following ratio (I), ( cumulative ? ? ? mass ? ? ? at ? ? ? 0.5 ? ? ? ? rc ? \ ) ( cumulative ? ? ? mass ? ? ? at ? ? ? 2 ? ? ? ?m ) <= 0.5 , ( I ) and a median particle size (D50) less than or equal to 2.0 ?m. Also disclosed is a method of preparing a composition comprising inventive hydrous kaolins, as well as a method of increasing the dispersion rate of hydrous kaolins. Products, such as inks, paints, polymer products, rubber products, and coatings, using the inventive hydrous kaolins are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20070123629
    Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for preparing a PVC tinted system, such as a paint. After the preparation of the tinted system, at least one of its optical properties can be adjusted by the addition of at least one white pigment that includes a white pigment other than TiO2. The optical properties that can be adjusted include at least one of tint strength, opacity, color, and whiteness.

  • Publication number: 20060169174
    Abstract: The present invention relates to coarse calcined kaolin slurries having a high solids content. The invention also relates to method of making such slurries. The resulting slurries can have a solids content of at least about 58% by weight wherein at least about 40% by weight of the calcined kaolin particles has a particle size of at least about 1 arm. The slurries can be stabilized where the solids show little settling from suspension. The slurries have many uses, including fillers or extenders in paint and coating compositions for paper or paper board. More generally, the inventive products may be used wherever calcined kaolins are used. The present invention also relates to coarse calcined kaolin slurries having a multimodal particle size distribution and a high solids content.
