  • Patent number: 6118773
Abstract: A diversity selection process which tests to determine whether poor reception is caused by co-channel interference or multipath fading is disclosed. The impairment is determined by first testing the quality over several frames. Unless the quality is poor over these several frames, the system tests for multipath fading by selecting the antenna with the greater signal strength, provided no hold condition exists. However, if poor quality has been present over the several frame period, the system selects the other antenna if its RSSI is greater. However, the system also tests the RSSI received on the current antenna and determines the impairment was co-channel interference if the signal of quality was sufficiently high. In which case a hold condition is set for a number of frames to prevent excessive switching.

  • Patent number: 6035183
Abstract: A system and method for a fixed wireless access terminal to determine and display to a user forward link and reverse link RSSI and BER signal quality information. The reverse link information is measured by a basestation and transmitted to the terminal in a message. The quality information is displayed to the user with sufficient resolution to allow the user to adjust the location of the fixed wireless access terminal to optimize the quality of the link. The reverse link information may also be used as a basis for performing transmit switch diversity.

  • Patent number: 6002672
Abstract: A diversity selection process for a wireless terminal having two antennas is disclosed which tests reception on both the main antenna and a diversity antenna during the period when the terminal is transmitting and tests reception of a different channel (for example, for mobile assisted hand-off) during an idle period when the terminal is neither receiving or transmitting data. The antenna with the greater signal strength is selected for the next frame. Thus, both diversity and mobile assisted hand-off measurements can be made with a single receiver.
