Patent number: 8782208Abstract: A method is disclosed for use by an Interrogating Call/Session Control Function (I-CSCF) of an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). In the method, a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) message is received by the I-CSCF, which the I-CSCF attempts to forward to a Serving Call/Session Control Function (S-CSCF) of the IMS assigned to provide services to a user. If the attempt is determined to have failed, the I-CSCF sends a message to a Home Subscriber Server (HSS) of the IMS to request capabilities information for selecting a S-CSCF, the request message also providing first information relating to the status of the assigned S-CSCF. On receipt of the capabilities information at the I-CSCF from the HSS, the I-CSCF selects a replacement S-CSCF to provide services to the user. Related methods are also disclosed for use by the HSS and S-CSCF.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 2007Date of Patent: July 15, 2014Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Maria Carmen Belinchón Vergara, Germán Blanco, Juan Manuel Fernandez Galmes, Hubert Przybysz, Andreas Schumacher, Stephen Terrill

Patent number: 8732321Abstract: Control entity and method for setting up a session in a communications network, subscriber database, and communications network. The control entity advantageously has or has access to memory for storing information, and typically includes an input device for receiving a request to set up a session in the communications network, a processor unit for processing the request, and an output device for sending messages. The processor unit is arranged to determine if the request comprises a valid Communication Service Identifier (CSI) the CSI identifying the type of communication service of the session that is to be established over the communications network. And if the request does not comprise a valid Communication Service Identifier, to execute a default CSI procedure using default CSI information stored in the memory.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 2012Date of Patent: May 20, 2014Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Johannes Van Elburg, Stephen Terrill, Bo Aström

Patent number: 8503976Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing location information for subscribers connected to a packet-switched mobile access network in connection with emergency calls made over a multimedia service network. An emergency request is received at the multimedia service network from a subscriber containing the calling number of the subscriber. In response thereto, a media gateway control function in the multimedia service network sends a location query including said calling number to a mobile positioning center in the mobile access network, which then can retrieve location information for the subscriber. After receiving location information from the mobile positioning center, the media gateway control function selects an emergency center and sends a location indication for the subscriber thereto in a circuit-switched control message for initiating an emergency call, according to prevailing standards.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 2012Date of Patent: August 6, 2013Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Ake Busin, Magnus Olsson, Stephen Terrill

Patent number: 8489682Abstract: A method and application server for handling a supplementary services message in a communication network. A subscriber's Home Location Register (HLR) sends an Interrogation marker to the subscriber's Mobile-services Switching Center/Visitor Location Register (MSC/VLR) instructing the MSC/VLR to forward all supplementary services messages from the subscriber to the HLR. When the subscriber's user terminal sends a supplementary services message to the MSC/VLR requesting a supplementary service, the MSC/VLR forwards the message to the subscriber's HLR. The HLR retrieves an address of an IP Multimedia Application Server associated with the subscriber, and sends the supplementary services message to the addressed Application Server for handling the supplementary services request.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 2007Date of Patent: July 16, 2013Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Bo Åström, Stephen Terrill

Patent number: 8477763Abstract: A method of operating a Call Session Control Function node within an IP Multimedia Subsystem network. The method comprises establishing a first session corresponding to a first IP Multimedia Subsystem communication service using a first Application Server, receiving a request for a further session corresponding to a further IP Multimedia Subsystem communication service, and forwarding said request to a further Application Server. Said further Application Server is additionally notified that said first communication service is ongoing and of the nature of said first session.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2006Date of Patent: July 2, 2013Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Miguel-Angel Pallares-Lopez, Nuria Esteban-Vares, Stephen Terrill, Jose-Javier Díez-García

Patent number: 8446902Abstract: The invention relates to method of executing a service in a Media Gateway Control Function for establishing a call between a calling party's terminal served by a Mobile Switching Centre, and an IP Multimedia Subsystem Service. The Media Gateway Control Function is arranged to query a Service Control Point on which an overlay process is loaded. The correct SCP is identified by the MGCF using a correlation identifier originally published by the SCP itself after having received an IN service trigger from an MSC or GMSC. The MGCF will receive call related data from the SCP, such as the original dialled number. This data is used by the MGCF to populate information elements in a SIP Invite message. The invention gives a solution for providing GSM specific information, e.g. dialled number, location information, to an IMS service. This information may not be available to the IMS service through present methods.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 2012Date of Patent: May 21, 2013Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (Publ)Inventors: Rogier August Caspar Joseph Noldus, Stephen Terrill

Patent number: 8442517Abstract: A method and an apparatus for controlling a communication established between terminals through a telecommunications system. When a malfunction event related to a communication (310) established between terminals is detected (320), a determination (330) is made in the telecommunications system of a faulty terminal and a non-faulty terminal, according to the malfunction event. Subsequently, the telecommunications systems determines (340) whether a terminal is registered for a user identifier which was registered through the faulty terminal, or which is related to it by subscription and, in that case, it establishes (350) a new communication between said registered terminal and the non-faulty terminal. The user of the non-faulty terminal can rely on the telecommunications system to recover automatically the lost communication, without trying to attempt a new communication request with an uncertain result.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 2006Date of Patent: May 14, 2013Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: John Michael Walker, Stephen Terrill

Patent number: 8331354Abstract: A method, application server, and Serving Call/Session Control Function (S-CSCF) for allocating a SIP Application Server to a subscriber in an IP Multimedia Subsystem. A Home Subscriber Server (HSS) identifies for the subscriber, a set of provisioned initial filter criteria, which contains at least one generic SIP Application Server identity. The HSS sends the filter criteria to an S-CSCF allocated to the subscriber. The S-CSCF resolves the generic SIP Application Server identity into a plurality of application server addresses, with one of the addresses being allocated to the subscriber for use in provisioning a service to the subscriber. The S-CSCF caches the address allocated to the subscriber for subsequent use.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 2005Date of Patent: December 11, 2012Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Stephen Terrill, Bo Åström, Hubert Przybysz, Anders Ryde, Stefan Berg
