  • Patent number: 7376711
Abstract: A smart card enabled mobile personal computing environment system stores a user's personalized, fully functional, computing environment in a smart card. A user information database is provided that is resident on a server and contains the user records of a plurality of users containing personal computing environment data with the amount of data in the user record generally larger than the storage capacity of a smart card. The user to specifies the information required to configure the client to the user's preferred personal computing environment. If the correct personal computing environment data is not resident in the smart card, the client queries the server for the information needed and updates the smart card with the new data. The user also manages his personal computing environment data stored on the smart card and the user information database. The server gives the client access to the user's records through a secure Web site.

  • Patent number: 7292946
Abstract: A controller includes a plurality of readers for reading an associated plurality of expansion cards and for controlling operation of such expansion cards, wherein at least one of the plurality of readers is a flash media reader. A method for controlling the operation of at least one expansion card with an integrated controller having a plurality of readers includes detecting the presence of at least one expansion card, and enabling a selected reader of the integrated controller associated with at least one expansion card. Another method of writing data to read only memory in an integrated controller includes unlocking the read only memory, writing information into the read only memory, and locking the read only memory to prevent otherwise unintentional or unauthorized writing to the read only memory is also provided.

  • Patent number: 6981152
Abstract: A smart card security information configuration and recovery system provides a secure Web site and server that allows smart card users to easily create and obtain smart cards and passwords. The client program accesses the smart card inserted into the client computer and retrieves the smart card's ID and other user and system information and sends them to the server which creates an access key. The access key and the smart card ID are stored in the client computer's CMOS or non-volatile memory for boot-up access. The client computer will boot only if the proper smart card is installed or the proper access key is entered when the smart card is unavailable. If the user loses his smart card, then he must gain access to his computer through the access key which the server issues after the user logs in. When the user wants to get a new smart card issued, he logs onto the server which is sent the new smart card's ID that replaces the previous smart card's ID and the server generates a new access key and stores it.

  • Publication number: 20040268133
Abstract: A secure personal identification entry system provides an integrated approach to secure identification data entry. A controller resides in a secure PIN smart card keyboard that also contains a numeric keypad and a smart card reader and allows the numeric keypad to server two purposes: the first as a normal keypad in a keyboard and the second as a secure PIN entry keypad. The user inserts his smart card, with his PIN number information stored in the smart card's memory, into the smart card reader. An application program running on a PC that requires secure identification from the user requests that the user enter his PIN number using the keypad on the keyboard. The controller receives the PIN request and switches the keypad from normal mode to PIN entry mode. The keypad is switched to be dedicated to PIN entry and communicates with the controller. The user enters his PIN number into the keypad. The controller receives the PIN number and forwards the PIN number to the smart card.

  • Publication number: 20030013414
Abstract: A wireless radio system for providing short-range wireless links between digital devices includes an RF transceiver and a digital baseband portion for establishing and maintaining links. The RF transceiver is embodied on a PC expansion card received b y a PC card expansion slot. At least a portion of the digital baseband is integrated on a host controller, equipped with logic sets for detecting and operating various types of expansion cards. One such logic set detects and operates the transceiver expansion card, so that a connection between the transceiver and the baseband is maintained. Removing the transceiver card detaches the transceiver, altogether eliminating wireless functionality. By substituting cards having transceivers adapted to local conditions, the radio system may be modified to accommodate regional variations in the LSM radio band.
