  • Patent number: 9576049
Abstract: Computer storage media, computerized methods, and systems for semantically navigating between content using zoom operations, as well as other user-initiated operations, are provided. The zoom operations include an open-pinch gesture (zoom in) and a closed-pinch gesture (zoom out) physically applied to a touch-screen display of a client device, where the touch-screen display presents a document with original content. When one or more of the zoom operations have been detected as being performed upon a targeted portion of the original content, new content that is relevant to the targeted content is retrieved, as opposed to simply expanding or contracting the original content within a display area of the touch-screen display. The document is transitioned to a view with representations of the new content organized according to a format, where the format is dictated by a type of the one or more zoom operations being performed.

  • Patent number: 8762360
Abstract: Computer-readable media, computer systems, and computing methods are provided for implicitly discovering applications using a query or search results, where the query does not explicitly target a particular application. A search engine is used to receive a user-initiated query and to employ a keyword of the query to generate an initial set of search results. Characteristics of the search results are identified and applications that are relevant to the characteristics are determined. The determination of relevant applications include: accessing an application manifest that manages a mapping between applications and predefined characteristics; comparing the characteristics of the search results against the predefined characteristics of the application manifest to determine a match; and, when a match exists between the search-result characteristics and the predefined characteristics, identifying applications mapped to the matched characteristics as being relevant to the search results.

  • Publication number: 20140101600
Abstract: Users are provided with information regarding entities and tasks that are associated with the user's current context, which includes the content currently being presented to the user. Services associated with a search engine database identify entities and associated tasks. A user's context is utilized to identify one or more entities and one or more associated tasks that may be relevant to the user's current context. Entities and tasks are presented through a dedicated menu, icon, or other like dedicated user interface element to which the user can direct action. Also, entities and tasks are presented through a separate user interface context, such as a separate screen. A user's context can also include information regarding future content that will be presented to the user. Then, entities and tasks are presented via the same user interface mechanisms used to request such content, such as textual input user interface mechanisms.
