Patent number: 11255583Abstract: Apparatus, systems, and methods for providing cooled air to an aircraft using dry ice. The cooling apparatus includes dry ice hopper to store dry ice and feed it to a dry ice mill, which is turn mills the dry ice into an insulated vessel containing a fluid coolant. A fluid coolant loop connects the insulated vessel with a heat exchanger, and a pump transports the fluid coolant through the fluid coolant loop. An agitator within the insulated vessel is coupled to the pump, so that operation of the pump causes the agitator to agitate the mixture of fluid coolant and milled dry ice within the insulated vessel. Cool air is provided to the aircraft by an air delivery system that conveys air across the heat exchanger.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 2019Date of Patent: February 22, 2022Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventor: Steve Mackin

Patent number: 10208675Abstract: A hybrid drive system driven by a gas turbine engine is disclosed. The hybrid drive system includes a planetary gear set, a first motor-generator, and a second motor-generator. The planetary gear set includes a first member, a second member, and a third member. The first member is operatively coupled to the second member and the third member. The first member is operatively coupled to and transmits power from a shaft of the gas turbine engine. The first motor-generator is drivingly coupled to the third member. The second motor-generator includes an output and is drivingly coupled to the second motor-generator by the second member and the third member. The hybrid drive system is configured to transfer the power from the shaft to the output of the second motor-generator.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2017Date of Patent: February 19, 2019Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventor: Steve Mackin

Patent number: 10189572Abstract: An ice prevention system is configured to prevent ice from forming and/or melt ice with respect to one or more portions of an aircraft. The ice prevention system includes a combustor having an air inlet and a gas outlet. A supply air conduit is coupled to the air inlet of the combustor. The supply air conduit is configured to channel low pressure air to the combustor. One or more delivery conduits are coupled to the gas outlet of the combustor. The delivery conduit(s) are configured to be coupled to the one or more portions of the aircraft. The combustor is configured to exhaust heated gas to the delivery conduit(s) through the gas outlet to prevent ice from forming with respect to the portion(s) of the aircraft.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 2016Date of Patent: January 29, 2019Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Steve Mackin, Robert Earl Fisher
