  • Patent number: 9650233
Abstract: An industrial vehicle has a controller connected to a plurality of sensors for accumulating information related to operation of the vehicle. The controller employs that information in governing further vehicle operation to reduce the likelihood of damage to the vehicle or a load being transported. The information also is analyzed to determine how efficiently the industrial vehicle and its operator are performing in relation to performance benchmarks for the vehicle and in comparison to other industrial vehicles. Performance of the industrial vehicle can be limited to conserve battery power and restrict recharging the battery to off-peak hours of an electrical utility. When the sensors detect a malfunction of the industrial vehicle, a fault code is produced. A service technician can use that fault code to automatically access service manuals stored in the computer system of the vehicle and obtain information for diagnosing and correcting the malfunction.

  • Publication number: 20140278621
Abstract: A facility management computer system is automatically configured when a material handling asset, such as a lift truck, is installed at the facility. A memory stores metadata comprising an asset identification and data specifying characteristics and parameters of the asset that are necessary or desirable in order to enable the facility management computer system to utilize the asset and perform functions, such as assigning work tasks, evaluating asset performance, and scheduling maintenance and repairs, for example. During asset installation the memory is electrically connected to facility management computer system. Upon that connection, the metadata are transferred automatically from the memory into the facility management computer system. Thereafter, the facility management computer system uses the metadata to manage operation of the material handling asset.

  • Patent number: 8515629
Abstract: Operation of an industrial vehicle is controlled based on the location of that vehicle at a facility. The control method includes storing, in a memory device onboard the industrial vehicle, a definition of a first area in a facility. Radio signals are transmitted to the industrial vehicle from at least three transmitters, and for each radio signal, determining a propagation time from the transmitter to the industrial vehicle. A location of the industrial vehicle is derived from the propagation times of the radio signals, and the location is employed to determine when the industrial vehicle is within the first area. Operation of the industrial vehicle is altered in response to the industrial vehicle being within the first area. For example, the industrial vehicle may be disabled, its maximum travel speed limited or an alert is sent to the operator, when the industrial vehicle is within the first area.

  • Publication number: 20120239243
Abstract: A database, contained in a computer system onboard the industrial vehicle, stores repair information and as built information about the specific optional features incorporated into that particular industrial vehicle. For example, the database contains one or more of a repair manual, a parts manual, an operating manual, and service bulletins. Upon occurrence of an operating problem, the industrial vehicle generates a fault code designating the operating problem. The computer system uses the fault code to access the database and obtain the as built information and the repair information associated with the operating problem. The repair information may describe a process for diagnosing a cause of the operating problem, a process for identifying a defective component, and a process for replacing the defective component. The computer system also may place an order for a replacement component.

  • Publication number: 20120239261
Abstract: An industrial vehicle carries loads on which indicators have been placed. A method for controlling the industrial vehicle involves electronically reading a given indicator on a load being carried by the industrial vehicle to obtain a load identifier. Then, employing the load identifier to obtain data from a database, wherein that data indicates whether the load being carried requires delicate handling. In response to the data obtained from a database, restricting operation of the industrial vehicle to provide delicate handling of the load. Restricting the operation may include one or more of limiting a travel speed or acceleration of the industrial vehicle to less than a predefined level, and limiting a speed at which the load being carried is raised and lowered to less than a predetermined level.
