  • Patent number: 6508529
Abstract: When the data rate of incoming data is less than the print speed, there can be pauses in the print job. During a pause, wet ink may cause cockle growth at a portion of the media sheet within the print zone. To reduce such cockle growth a reduced number of nozzles are used when the data rate is less than the print speed. In particular the print swath is reduced. Only a downstream subset of nozzles are used, in effect shortening the portion of the media sheet receiving ink. The wet portion of the media sheet then is closer to the downstream edge of the print zone and soon away from the printhead. A guide shim also is advanced to maintain a flat media sheet near the active nozzles.

  • Publication number: 20020196137
    Abstract: A tire differentiating system (21, 121) is employed to differentiate tires (22, 24, 26, 28, 122, 124, 126, 128) in a vehicle (20, 120). Each tire includes a sensor (30, 32, 34, 36, 120, 132, 134, 136) which communicates with a receiver (38, 138). In a first example, when a tire (22, 24, 26, 28) is inflated above a high pressure threshold, a flag bit is stored in the sensor (30, 32, 34, 36) identifying the tire as a rear tire (26, 28). If a rear tire (26, 28) drops below a low pressure threshold, a warning algorithm is initiated to warn the driver. In a second example, the sensor (130, 132, 134, 136) is a transceiver with an RF detector circuit having an identification code. A RF transmitter (144, 146, 148, 150) is located proximate to each of the respective transceivers (130, 132, 134, 136). The receiver (138) sends a signal to each RF transmitter (144, 146, 148, 150) which generates a RF signal that is sent to the transceivers (130, 132, 134, 136).

  • Patent number: 6467410
Abstract: In a printer, liquid ink is applied to a print medium as the medium is passed through the printer. A low pressure zone is generated along one surface of the print medium to hold a portion of the print medium substantially flat for a period of time during and after the liquid ink is applied to the print medium. By subjecting the portion of the print medium to the low pressure zone, cockling of the print medium is prevented.

  • Publication number: 20020110400
Abstract: A printer with a media transport has a rigid, air-transmissive platen. A movable air-transmissive flexible web overlies the platen and moves along a feed axis. A suction device communicates with the platen to draw air through the web and through the platen so that a sheet of media carried on the web is biased toward the platen. A manifold underlies the platen and has a number of separate chambers open to the platen, so that the suction device is connected to each of the chambers. A controller operates to selectably prevent communication between the suction device and at least some of the chambers.

  • Publication number: 20020109697
Abstract: A method for enabling reduced transport display in a computer image generator connected to a host simulator which receives real-time input. The first step is performing real-time matrices calculations with the real-time input. The next step is processing geometry for primitives in a scene and storing the primitives in a double-buffered geometry buffer. The geometry buffer toggles as soon as the geometry processing is done without waiting for a field sync signal which reduces the transport delay normally found in image generation systems. Another step is rendering the primitives into a pixel frame buffer as soon as the geometry buffer toggles. The final step is displaying the pixel frame buffer. The rendering hardware and geometry processing hardware can also include enough processing power to complete the geometric transformations and rendering and in less than one display frame.

  • Patent number: 6409332
Abstract: An ink-jet apparatus employs a platen having an array of vacuum ports that are each filtered. The filter is constructed to provide restricted-airflow rates which remain uniform when the platen is either fully covered or partially uncovered. The filter mechanism provides both airflow restrictions such that ink drop flight trajectories in the printing zone are unaffected, acoustic dampening of the vacuum pump is provided, and vacuum pressure is kept relatively high proximate the print media edges.

  • Patent number: 6394596
Abstract: A belt-type support for moving print media such as paper through a printer includes a flexible belt that is supported in a manner such that friction is minimized and such that the paper that is supported on the belt is advanced precisely through the print zone of the printer. The support is provided in conjunction with a uniform distribution of vacuum pressure to the paper carried by the belt. In one preferred embodiment, there is provided a rigid, flat platen for supporting a uniformly porous belt. The platen has a number of rollers on its surface to minimize the friction developed between the platen surface and the moving belt. The platen surface also includes ports to provide a uniform distribution of vacuum pressure to the porous belt. In another embodiment, sliders are carried in the support surface of the platen to minimize frictional contact with the moving belt.

  • Publication number: 20020057321
Abstract: Accurate advance of a media sheet is achieved by carrying the media sheet on a belt loop. An upstream pinch roller holds the media sheet to the belt upstream of the print zone. A downstream pinch roller holds the media sheet to the belt downstream of the print zone. A guide shim extends along the media path from a position upstream of the upstream pinch roller, passed the upstream pinch roller toward the print zone. The guide shim advances with the bottom edge of the media sheet into the print zone to stabilize the trailing edge so as to allow for a smaller minimum bottom margin.

  • Patent number: 6357848
Abstract: An apparatus and method for reducing print media edge margin tolerances in a printing device with one or more supplies of print media are disclosed. An apparatus embodiment includes a sensor that detects a supply of print media and outputs a signal indicative of the detected supply of print media. The apparatus also includes a computing device that receives the signal indicative of the detected supply of print media. The computing device determines a median position of the supply of print media in a printzone of the printing device based on a plurality of trials of feeding the supply of print media into the printzone and adjusts a position in the printzone for the supply of print media where printing composition is deposited based on the determined median position of the supply of print media in the printzone.

  • Patent number: 6357869
Abstract: A vacuum holddown for sheet materials has a surface having a field of vacuum ports in which each individual port is gated. When a vacuum is applied to the underside of the holddown, the gates close. When a sheet of material is introduced onto a region of the field, the gates only within vacuum manifold passageway covered by the material are configured to spring open, applying a suction force to the sheet via the now opened ports. The holddown thus automatically adjusts to material size. An implementation for use in an ink-jet printer with cut-sheet print media is demonstrated.
