Patent number: 10969622Abstract: A multi-pixel display panel can display an image that includes an informational element. A multi-element backlight panel can backlight the display panel. A controller coupled to the display panel and the backlight panel can control the backlight panel to illuminate the informational element more brightly or more dimly than portions of the image away from the informational element. In some examples, the controller can illuminate personal information more dimly than portions of the image away from the personal information, which can provide privacy for a user. In some examples, the controller can illuminate a prompt for a user action more brightly than portions of the image away from the prompt, which can call attention of the user to the prompt. In some examples, the controller can adjust an illumination level of at least a portion of the backlight panel in response to a sensed ambient light level.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 2018Date of Patent: April 6, 2021Assignee: NCR CorporationInventors: Phil Noel Day, Donald Iain MacInnes, Steve Swaine

Patent number: 10891821Abstract: A terminal is provided. The terminal includes a horizontal touch-based operating surface, a first vertical support side car, and a second vertical support safe enclosure. The operating surface includes integrated transaction devices that perform transaction processing on the terminal. The operating surface can be dynamically switched between a self-service mode of operation, an assisted service mode of operation, and a teller-service mode of operation. Each mode of operation dynamically orients displayed information on the operating surface to a particular side or both sides of the operating surface and selectively activates and deactivates the integrated devices.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 2019Date of Patent: January 12, 2021Assignee: NCR CorporationInventors: Steve Swaine, Grant Charles Paton, Charles G V Rohan

Publication number: 20200065786Abstract: To more efficiently use space and equipment, an automated teller machine can be made to switch easily among any of three modes, such as a self-service mode, an assisted-service mode, and a teller-service mode. The ATM can include a display positioned on a housing. The display can be rotatably positionable about an axis. A position sensor can sense a rotational position of the display. A processor can determine a mode of operation of the automated teller machine in response to the sensed rotational position of the display. In response to the determination that the rotational position corresponds to one of three specified rotational positions, the processor can automatically select one of three specified sets of settings for the automated teller machine and/or one of three specified sets of selectable options on the display.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 26, 2018Publication date: February 27, 2020Inventor: Steve Swaine

Patent number: 10540857Abstract: To overcome the difficulties caused by variation in user interfaces from self-service terminal to self-service terminal, a self-service terminal can use a standardized interface device that is compatible with other terminal types and other regions. The interface device can be positioned on a housing and electrically coupled to the housing via a secure physical connection. Media readers can be integrated into the interface device. An encrypted touch-sensitive display can be integrated into the interface device and positioned on a front of the interface device. The touch-sensitive display can show prompts to initiate a transaction at the self-service terminal. The prompts can provide instructions for causing physical media to be read at any one of the media readers to produce identification data. A processor positioned in the housing can receive the identification data from the interface device via the secure physical connection.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2018Date of Patent: January 21, 2020Assignee: NCR CorporationInventors: Phil Noel Day, Steven James Birnie, Elina Inkeri Jokisuu, Margaret McKendry, Marshall Munro, Andrew William Douglas Smith, Steve Swaine

Publication number: 20190266854Abstract: An automated teller machine (ATM) can be mounted in a wall. A sleeve can attach to the wall to prevent access between a consumer side of the wall and a service side of the wall. A fascia can be repositioned between an engaged position and a retracted position. The fascia can be accessed from the consumer side of the wall through an aperture in the sleeve when the fascia is in the engaged position. The fascia can be positioned on the service side of the wall when the fascia is in the retracted position. A shutter can automatically cover the aperture in the sleeve when the fascia moves to the retracted position. The shutter can provide added security when a service person is servicing the ATM. Because the service person can access the fascia, the ATM can advantageously omit redundant display or input components accessible only to the service side.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 27, 2018Publication date: August 29, 2019Inventors: Ian McFarlane Denny, Marshall Munro, Steve Swaine

Publication number: 20060070883Abstract: A submersible assembly for exposing respective front surfaces of different work-pieces to an electroplating bath as a partial respective electrodes thereof, while protecting opposing, rear surfaces of the work-pieces from the bath. The assembly includes a wall, having a front surface also partially forming a first electrode of the bath, and having an opening smaller in size than the perimeter of a work-piece while substantially corresponding in size to the portion of the front surface of the work-piece to be exposed to the bath. The assembly also includes a chuck mechanism for applying pressure against the rear surface of the work-piece to thereby hold the work-piece against a rear surface of the wall and create a fluid-tight seal between the rear surface of the wall and the perimeter of the front surface of the work-piece, thereby exposing the front surface of the work-piece to the bath while protecting the rear surface of the work-piece from exposure to the bath.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 4, 2004Publication date: April 6, 2006Applicant: Chemical Safety Technology, Inc.Inventors: Lincoln Bejan, Douglas Crafts, Steve Swain, Duy Trang

Publication number: 20060001310Abstract: A lug bolt adapted for use on an automobile having at least a double lead to decrease the number turns a lug nut requires to screw the lug nut onto the lug bolt. The lug bolt may comprise a triple or quadruple lead, or even more leads. A racing automobile may be provided having the lug bolt for the mounting of a wheel thereon using a correspondingly-leaded lug nut. The racing automobile may be a NASCAR automobile, in one embodiment.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 30, 2005Publication date: January 5, 2006Inventors: Douglas Crafts, Steve Swain, Duane Cook, Gilbert Rothweiler
