  • Publication number: 20220066082
Abstract: Transmissive and reflective all-dielectric metastructures are presented that offer tailored polarization conversions and spectral responses. The metastructures consist of stacked deeply subwavelength, high contrast gratings of different fill factors and rotations. Broadband metastructures that perform a given polarization conversion over a wide continuous bandwidth will be shown, as well as multiband metastructures that perform a common polarization conversion over different bands. Unlike conventional stacked grating geometries, the transmissive metastructures do not require antireflection layers since impedance matching is incorporated into their design. The subwavelength gratings are modeled as homogeneous anisotropic layers, allowing an overall metastructure to be treated as a stratified dielectric medium. Quasi-static analysis is used to homogenize the subwavelength gratings and represent them with effective dielectric constants.

  • Patent number: 9945666
Abstract: A narrowband transmission system includes a dielectric grating that defines a surface and includes a plurality of longitudinal members arranged along an axis. The longitudinal members are surrounded by a medium. The longitudinal members are made of a material that has an index of refraction that is greater than an index of refraction of the medium. The dielectric grating is configured to receive radiation at the surface. The system further includes a means for breaking a symmetry between the radiation and the dielectric grating such that the dielectric grating transmits a given wavelength band of the radiation through the dielectric grating while rejecting remainder of wavelengths embodied in the radiation.

  • Patent number: 9798439
Abstract: The invention provides a display interface in a social networking system that enables the presentation of information related to a user in a timeline or map view. The system accesses information about a user of a social networking system, including both data about the user and social network activities related to the user. The system then selects one or more of these pieces of data and/or activities from a certain time period and gathers them into timeline units based on whether the viewing user has permission to view them. These timeline units are ranked by relevance to the user, and are used to generate a timeline for the user containing visual representations of the timeline units organized by time. The timeline view is then provided to other users of the social networking system that wish to view information about the user.

The system accesses information about a user of a social networking system, including both data about the user and social network activities related to the user. The system then selects one or more of these pieces of data and/or activities from a certain time period and gathers them into timeline units based on their relatedness and their relevance to users. These timeline units are ranked by relevance to the user, and can then determine a quantity of timeline for display in the timeline view and select them based at least in part on the ranking. The units then are used to generate a timeline view for the user containing visual representations of the timeline units organized by location or time.

  • Patent number: 9793720
Abstract: A near-field plate is a non-periodically patterned surface that can overcome the diffraction limit and confine electromagnetic fields to subwavelength dimensions. By controlling the interference of the electromagnetic fields radiated by the near-field plate with that of a source, the near-field plate can form a subwavelength near-field pattern in a forward direction, while suppressing fields in other directions, such as those reflected. The resulting unidirectional near-field plate may find utility in many applications such as high resolution imaging and probing, high density data storage, biomedical targeting devices, and wireless power transfer.

  • Publication number: 20170291808
Abstract: Systems and methods for dispensing chilled wine using a dispensing appliance. The appliance generally comprises a housing or enclosure protecting internal components and providing a chilled chamber for wine storage and an unchilled chamber for electric and other components. An airtight wine “silo” containing a packaged wine is insertable into a cradle in the chilled chamber for attaching to a fluid connector system. The user operates a handle to control wine flow. Identifiers on the silo may be read and transmitted to a server, where learning algorithms can suggest alternative wines the user may like based on user feedback about prior wines used with the appliance.

  • Patent number: 9065965
Abstract: An apparatus, system and method are described which allows multimedia signals received from one or more content providers (e.g., cable television providers, Internet content providers, . . . etc) to be received, processed and retransmitted by an originating node to one or more receiving nodes over a local cable network (e.g., the coaxial cable network within a user's home). One impediment to communication between nodes within the local cable network is the fact that most cable splitters are designed to attenuate signals between the split legs of the splitter. Accordingly, in one embodiment of the invention, a reflector device coupled upstream of the root splitter in a local cable network (or in place of the root splitter) is configured to reflect signals transmitted from the originating node back up into the network to the receiving nodes. Signal attenuation is minimized because the signals propagate from the splitter inputs to the splitter legs (rather than between the splitter legs).

  • Publication number: 20140374443
Abstract: A container for the storage, transport and consumption of a carbonated beverage, and specifically a carbonated malt beverage such as, but not limited to, beer, which utilizes a flexible inner container and a rigid outer container (often a wall of the dispenser) which is presented in generally close proximity thereto by having inner dimensions similar to the outer dimensions of the internal bag. In order to dispense the beverage, an external source of gas, which will commonly be carbon dioxide or nitrogen, is used to feed gas directly into the flexible container portion of the device and the beverage itself. This causes the interior container to push against the rigid walls of the exterior container creating pressure and dispensing the beverage.
