Patent number: 5853490Abstract: Prevention of flash rusting of iron-containing substrates is achieved by contacting the substrates with aqueous solutions containing carbonate and/or bicarbonate salts. The treatment process can be effected during cleaning of the substrates with an aqueous alkaline cleaner or during a post cleaning step such as during rinsing of the substrates subsequent to cleaning.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1996Date of Patent: December 29, 1998Assignee: Church & Dwight Inc.Inventors: Steven Dunn, Steven A. Bolkan, Francis Cala, Anthony Winston

Patent number: 5834411Abstract: An aqueous metal cleaning composition is provided which comprises an alkalinity providing agent such as alkali metal carbonate and/or bicarbonate salts and a low foaming surfactant. The aqueous cleaning solution has specific foam height and foam collapse characteristics, and provides for substantially complete phase separation of a contaminant phase from the aqueous cleaning composition such that there is substantially no aqueous phase drag out into the contaminant phase; and the contaminant phase can be removed easily, and the aqueous cleaning solution can be recovered and reused.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1996Date of Patent: November 10, 1998Assignee: Church & Dwight Co., IncInventors: Steven A. Bolkan, Gale A. Byrnes, Steven Dunn, Alfredo Vinci, Antony E. Winston, Patricia L. Phillips

Patent number: 5736495Abstract: A composition and method for cleaning metal and for inhibiting corrosion of metal. The composition is composed of an alkaline metal salt, a surfactant, and a corrosion inhibitor with a pH in the range from about 7.5 to less than 10, and is preferably silicate free. The corrosion inhibitor is provided in the form of a combination of a triazole compound and an alkali metal borate. The composition can be employed to clean metal surfaces as an aqueous concentrate or aqueous solution.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1995Date of Patent: April 7, 1998Assignee: Church & Dwight Co., Inc.Inventors: Steven A. Bolkan, Steve Dunn

Patent number: 5552078Abstract: A powdered laundry detergent composition comprising an active surfactant, at least about 70 wt. % of a water soluble alkaline carbonate salt, e.g., sodium carbonate, about 0.1 to 2 wt. % of a phosphorus-containing sequestering agent, e.g., sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), about 0.1 to 2 wt. % of a polymeric polycarboxylate, e.g., a polyacrylate or a polymaleate, and about 1-12 wt. % water. Use of the foregoing detergent composition provides excellent cleaning and whitening of fabrics while avoiding the problem of eutrophication which occurs when a substantial amount of a phosphorus containing builder such as STPP is present in the composition, and while minimizing the problem of fabric encrustation often present when the composition contains a large amount of carbonate builder.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1994Date of Patent: September 3, 1996Assignee: Church & Dwight Co., Inc.Inventors: Charles D. Carr, Steven A. Bolkan, Joseph G. Becker

Patent number: 5496376Abstract: A laundry detergent composition, wherein the solids content comprises an active surfactant, at least about 70 wt. % of a water soluble alkaline carbonate, e.g., sodium carbonate, and, a minor amount, for example, about 0.05 to 5 wt. % of a polymeric polycarboxylate, e.g., an acrylic acid polymer, based on the total weight of solids in the composition, the polymeric polycarboxylate being in a form such that its complete release into wash water is delayed to at least about 60 seconds after the complete dissolution of the alkaline carbonate. For example, the polymeric polycarboxylate may be present in slow dissolving granules which also contain a diluent salt such as sodium carbonate and a binder such as a low molecular weight polyethylene glycol. The delayed release of the polymeric polycarboxylate reduces fabric encrustation during washing, i.e., the precipitation of CaCO.sub.3 onto fabric surfaces due to the presence of soluble alkaline carbonate.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1994Date of Patent: March 5, 1996Assignee: Church & Dwight Co., Inc.Inventors: Anthony J. Falotico, Steven A. Bolkan, Louis R. Mazzola
-
Patent number: 5482647Abstract: A powdered laundry detergent composition is provided comprising an active surfactant, at least about 70 wt. % of a water soluble alkaline carbonate salt, and about 0.1 to 5.0 wt. % of a terpolymer of acrylic acid, maleic acid, and acrylamide.Use of the foregoing detergent composition provides excellent cleaning and whitening of fabrics while avoiding any serious problem of eutrophication which occurs when a substantial amount of a phosphorus containing builder such as STPP is present in the composition, and while minimizing the problem of fabric encrustation often present when the composition contains a large amount of carbonate builder.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1993Date of Patent: January 9, 1996Assignee: Church & Dwight Co., Inc.Inventors: Steven A. Bolkan, Joseph G. Becker

Patent number: 5431836Abstract: A laundry detergent composition, wherein the solids content comprises an active surfactant, at least about 70 wt. % of a water soluble alkaline carbonate, e.g., sodium carbonate, up to about 12 wt. % of elemental magnesium in the form of a water soluble salt, e.g., magnesium sulfate or magnesium chloride, and about 0.05 to 5 wt. % of a polymeric polycarboxylate, e.g., an acrylic acid polymer, based on the total weight of solids in the composition. Incorporation of magnesium ions in the foregoing laundry detergent composition containing carbonate ions is intended to minimize negative interactions that will occur between the precipitation of calcium carbonate and the surfaces of the fabric being cleaned, e.g., fabric encrustation, with an enhancement of this effect due to the presence of the polymeric polycarboxylate.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 1993Date of Patent: July 11, 1995Assignee: Church & Dwight Co., Inc.Inventors: Charles D. Carr, Joseph G. Becker, Anthony J. Falotico, Steven A. Bolkan
