  • Patent number: 7238650
Abstract: A composition of matter comprising an amine acylated with a hydrocarbyl group substituted carboxylic acylating agent containing an average of from 1.3 to 1.6 groups derived from ?,?-unsaturated carboxylic compounds per Mn of the hydrocarbyl group, wherein the hydrocarbyl group has Mn determined by GPC ranging from 1500 to 3000, the amine comprises polyamine bottoms and said acylated amine has total base number (TBN) ranging from 17 to 35. A method for preparing the composition, lubricating oils containing the composition and, in another embodiment, lubricating oil compositions of this invention further comprising a metal overbased sulfonate detergent.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: July 3, 2007
    Assignee: The Lubrizol Corporation
Inventors: Raymond M. Calder, Steven A. Goodlive, Jeffry G. Dietz, Wolfie Kotzen, Brent R. Dohner, Frederic Martin, John K. Pudelski
  • Publication number: 20060116297
Abstract: An internal combustion engine can be cleaned of sludge, deposits, or wear debris, by supplying to lubricated surfaces of said engine a composition having a kinematic viscosity of 1 to 10 mm2/s at 100° C. comprising oil having at least 15% aromatics by ASTM D-2007; at least 2.5 weight percent of a nitrogen-containing dispersant; at least 0.6 weight percent of an overbased metal detergent; and at least about 0.5 weight percent of a metal salt of a phosphorus acid, circulating the composition through the engine and removing the composition from the engine.

  • Publication number: 20040147412
Abstract: A composition of matter comprising an amine acylated with a hydrocarbyl group substituted carboxylic acylating agent containing an average of from 1.3 to 1.6 groups derived from &agr;,&bgr;-unsaturated carboxylic compounds per {overscore (M)}n of the hydrocarbyl group, wherein the hydrocarbyl group has {overscore (M)}n determined by GPC ranging from 1500 to 3000, the amine comprises polyamine bottoms and said acylated amine has total base number (TBN) ranging from 17 to 35. A method for preparing the composition, lubricating oils containing the composition and, in another embodiment, lubricating oil compositions of this invention further comprising a metal overbased sulfonate detergent.

  • Patent number: 6331647
Abstract: A process for the preparation of a purified monomer is disclosed which comprises the steps of reacting an impure monomer wherein R1 and R2 are independently hydrogen or alkyl groups containing from 1 to about 6 carbon atoms, with (B) a substantially aqueous solution of an oxide or hydroxide of the structure MO or MOH wherein M is a Group IA or Group IIA metal, or an amine of the structure NR3R4R5 wherein R3, R4 and R5 are independently hydrogen or alkyl, alkanol or alkoxy groups containing from 1 to about 12 carbon atoms, wherein the molar ratio of (A):(B) is from about 1:1-2 for Group IA metals, 2:1-2 for Group IIA metals or ratio of moles of (A) to nitrogens of (B) is from about 1:1-2 nitrogens to form a salt, wherein in order to prevent polymerization of (A), the purified monomer or both or prevent undesired side reactions, the reaction of (A) and (B) occurs at a temperature of between about −20 to 75° C. and at a pH between about 7 to about 12.
