    Abstract: Provided herein is a golf ball that includes a generally spherical surface and an array of dimples formed on the surface. The undimpled portion of the spherical surface is the land area. At least one of the dimples includes a perimeter, a base, and a sidewall connecting the perimeter to the base. The sidewall forms an edge angle with the ball surface. The edge angle at a particular point on the perimeter is proportional to width of the land area adjacent to the point. Where the land area width is wide, the edge angle is high. Similarly, where the land area width is narrow, the edge angle is low. As the width of the land area in non-tessellated dimple patterns is determined by the position of the neighboring dimples, the edge angle varies cyclically around the perimeter, with the number of cycles corresponding to the number of neighboring dimples.

    Abstract: A golf ball mold having a non-planar parting surface that is formed a computerized modeling system such as CAD or CAE in combination with a CNC machine tool. The mold is comprised of hemispherical upper and lower mold halves being removably mated along the non-planar parting line that is distinct from the position corresponding to an equator line of the spherical cavity. Each mold half having an interior cavity detail for creating a pattern of dimples on the cover of the golf ball, wherein at least one dimple lies across an equator of the ball and the parting line passes around and between interdigitated dimples without intersecting them, therein creating a “seamless” golf ball. The non-planar surface of the upper mold half comprising at least three true sprues for venting of air and excess material; and at least three false sprues for the placement of tabs on the cover for use in aligning the golf ball as it is spun in a buffing machine.

The mold parts are flared outward towards the parting line, which creates a golf ball product having a flared area around the equator. The flared area is provided to facilitate post-mold processing steps, particularly buffing. Dimples are formed on the outer surface of the golf ball product, including the flared area. The flared area is removed, resulting in a spherical outer surface having uniform dimples throughout, including the equatorial region. Thus, the flared area allows for more an improved post-buff golf ball product.

In accordance to one aspect of the invention, the dimples have a polygonal perimeter and a concave depression. The concave depression satisfies only two of the following conditions: a substantially circular depression perimeter, a substantially spherical shape, and the depression contacting the perimeter of the dimple. In accordance to another aspect of the invention, one or more sides of the polygonal perimeter may be non-linear or curved. The dimples of the present invention may fill the ball's entire outer surface, or the dimples may occupy a predetermined pattern on the ball. The predetermined pattern may also include one or more channels or raised beads on the surface of the ball.

    Abstract: An improved mold for making a golf ball comprises a pair of mold cups which are assembled together at an angular interlock. An upper mold cup has a projection rim that mates with a recess in the lower mold cup to provide for a substantially perfect registration, wherein the shift on the molded golf ball is minimized, and the parting line has a minimal amount of flashing that needs to be removed. The upper and lower mold cups have mating surfaces that can produce a corrugated parting line. Each mating surface comprising a plurality of peaks and valleys which are created by multiple radii, whereby when assembled the parting line follows the dimple outline pattern and allows the dimple outline pattern of one mold cup to interdigitate with the dimple outline pattern of the mating mold cup, to form a golf ball of substantially seamless appearance.
