  • Patent number: 7959935
Abstract: A composition and a method of producing a composition which simulates hydration, cleansing and other properties of native vernix. The composition contains, in one embodiment, hydrated synthetic cells in a lipid matrix to provide properties which are substantially similar to those of native vernix, and may also contain proteins. In one embodiment, the composition contains water-in-oil emulsified particles providing water vapor transport and evaporative water loss properties simulating native vernix. In one embodiment, the composition contains cubosomes/water with up to 30% protein and about 5% lipid to about 30% lipid. The composition may be used to cleanse newborn skin, compromised skin surfaces, as well as normal skin, to provide hydration/barrier function, and other applications.

  • Patent number: 7807188
Abstract: A composition and a method of producing a composition which simulates hydration, cleansing and other properties of native vernix. The composition contains hydrated synthetic cells in a lipid matrix to provide rheological properties which are substantially similar to those of native vernix, and may also contain proteins. In one embodiment, the composition contains cubosomes/water with up to 30% protein and about 5% lipid to about 30% lipid. The composition may be used to cleanse newborn skin, compromised skin surfaces, as well as normal skin, to provide hydration/barrier function, and other applications.

  • Patent number: 6846490
Abstract: A protectant composition comprising vernix for a skin curative and skin protectant effect and a method of using the composition. A natural or synthetic vernix is dispersed in an effect amount and is applied to a surface. The method may be used to repel a naturally occurring agent such as water, or a synthetic agent to which exposure may occur, for example, in an occupational setting.

  • Patent number: 6333041
Abstract: A composition containing vernix to provide therapeutic treatment in a human, and a method for using the composition, are disclosed. The composition may contain a natural or synthetic medicament, or may be manipulated to regulate transport properties. The medicament may be, for example, a protectant against ultraviolet radiation or an antioxidant. Various compositions and uses of vernix, both natural and synthetic, are disclosed. The compositions may be used in embodiments such as skin protection, wound healing, and restoration of epidermal barrier function.

  • Patent number: 6113932
Abstract: A composition consisting essentially of vernix for a skin curative and skin protectant effect and a method of producing. A natural or synthetic vernix is dispersed in a film-forming amount in a biocompatable liquid such as dimethylsulfoxide, amniotic fluid and/or pulmonary surfactant to form a film. The film may be applied to a growing layer of epithelial cells either directly or supported on a substrate such as a wound dressing, a diaper, or a feminine hygiene product.
