Abstract: Systems and methods for managing digital assets in a distributed computing environment are described. Meta-data for the digital assets is stored separately from the digital assets. Meta-data for some of the digital assets is copied and stored at a central location. Meta-data for the digital assets is generated by clients of the system. A method of providing controlled access to a digital asset of a distributed computing environment includes: creating a repository on the file server to store the digital asset; creating a database within the created repository, the database comprising access control information; recording in the database a first action of a client related to the digital asset; and prior to allowing a second action by the client or another client, evaluating the database to control access to the digital asset.

Abstract: A storage system is provided that includes a plurality of storage devices and a data structure, accessible to the storage system, that includes a plurality of records corresponding to a plurality of network devices that are coupled to the storage system. Each record includes configuration data that identifies each of the plurality of storage devices to which data access by a respective one of the plurality of network devices is authorized. Each record may further include visibility data that identifies whether certain types of non-data access, such as requests for general information relating to a respective storage device, by a respective one of the plurality of network devices is permitted, even though data access to the respective storage device by the respective one of the plurality of network devices is not authorized.

Abstract: One embodiment is directed to a method in a computer system including a host computer and at least one storage system including first and second storage volumes, the host computer including at least one application program executing thereon. The method comprises acts of intercepting and redirecting an access request from the at least one application program to the first storage volume to the second storage volume. Other embodiments are directed to a computer readable medium with instructions for performing the method, a host computer with at least one controller to intercept and redirect the access request. Manipulations that can be performed by the storage device include moving non-contiguous blocks of data between the host computer and the storage device in a single operation. Abstract: A redundant communication network includes servers having production servers and a backup server; a storage system including a plurality of production volumes for storing data and a corresponding plurality of backup volumes connected to each of the production volumes. The redundant communication network also includes a first channel and a second channel for allowing communication between the production servers and the production volume of the storage system and a backup storage unit connected to the backup server. A method for performing a backup operation on the network includes the following steps. One of the production servers selects one of the production volumes for backup. The selected one of the production volumes is disconnected from a corresponding one of the plurality of backup volumes. The relative load on each of the first and second channels of the redundant communication network is determined.

Abstract: A network SCSI apparatus and method that comprises a network SCSI device driver which presents a SCSI device interface to a host computer for transmitting SCSI commands in packets over a network to one or more network SCSI applications servers on other computers at separate physical locations connected to local SCSI devices. In a preferred embodiment, the network SCSI device driver enables programs executing on the host computer to treat the local SCSI devices at the remote locations as though they were at the same location as the host computer, thereby overcoming limitations on the number of target devices available at the host site, as well as physical distance limitations imposed by SCSI device standards.
