    Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the position of a rotary member, particularly a rotary knife, utilizes a motor that is continuously coupled to the rotary member. A shaft position sensor and velocity sensor cooperate with motor control and drive circuitry to energize and brake the motor in accordance with the position and velocity of the motor drive shaft to provide a single cutting cycle each time a cut is required.
