  • Patent number: 6266524
Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for providing call screening in conjunction with a variety of network-based call services. An exemplary method for providing a called party at a called party station with call screening includes: (a) forwarding a call to the called party station (CPS) to a voice mailbox so that a caller can leave a message for the called party; (b) initiating a simplex call to the CPS; and (c) bridging the call forwarded to the voice mailbox and the simplex call to the CPS so that the called party can hear the caller leaving a message for the CPS; (d) initiating a duplex call to the CPS in response to signaling received from the CPS; and (e) bridging the call forwarded to the voice mailbox and the duplex call so that the caller and the called party are in communication with one another. In one embodiment of the present invention, the step of initiating a simplex call includes the step of delivering a distinctive ring to the CPS indicating that the caller is leaving a message for the CPS.

  • Patent number: 5668859
Abstract: Connection of a communication initiated by a user over a telephone, computer or cable network to a projector in arena or other event facility during an event. A user terminal is connected to the network and operative to initiate the communication from the user. Routing circuitry directs information in the user communication to the arena. A controller receives and processes the information in the user communication, and projectors in the arena project during the event a signal corresponding to information in the user communication. The signal may be an audio signal corresponding to voice information from the user and the projectors may be a set of loudspeakers. The voice information from the user may thus be projected within the arena as it is received. Alternatively, the number of incoming calls may be counted to determine a volume level for a set of loudspeakers which projects random applause through the arena, such that the user can influence the noise level in the arena at a particular time.

  • Patent number: 5561704
Abstract: A caller in a mobile vehicle requiring service determines his location such as longitude and latitude and transmits his location and service requirements in numbers; by wireless mobile phone tone signals to a remote directory station containing a data base with the phone numbers, service classifications and locations of service providers in the area of the caller to derive the telephone number of a provider who is conveniently closest to the caller and connects the caller to the communication channel of the selected telephone number or advises the caller of the selected providers telephone number. The database is regularly updated by the addition and deletion of providers subscribing to the service.

  • Patent number: 5381467
Abstract: The cost of a telephone toll call is shared by arranging the billing system of the telephone toll carrier to permit sharing of the period cost for at least one indivisible time period of a toll call. Accordingly, at least a portion of the period cost associated with at least one of the indivisible time periods of a toll call is assigned to both the terminating and originating subscribers, so that each subscriber to the toll call is billed for a portion of the total basic cost incurred for each of those indivisible periods of time over which it is agreed that the period costs will be shared. An authorization signal, indicating that the subscriber who would not have shared in the period costs for any indivisible period if the call had the call been placed as in the prior art--typically the terminating subscriber--agrees to accept his share of the period costs, may be required before any period cost sharing periods can occur.
