Patent number: 7667407Abstract: A fluorescent tanning lamp having a glass envelope has an ultra-violet light reflecting coating covering at least 180° of an inside surface of the envelope; and a phosphor layer covering substantially 360° of the inside surface of the envelope, including overlying the ultra-violet reflecting coating. An odor reducing photocatalytic material is provided on an outside surface of the envelope, the photocatalytic material being coextensive with the ultra-violet light reflecting material. A preferred material is anatase TiO2; i.e., the crystalline form.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 2007Date of Patent: February 23, 2010Assignee: OSRAM Sylvania Inc.Inventors: Steven C. Schlitt, Keith A. Patent number: 4988914Abstract: A fluorescent lamp designed to emit light in the red region of the visible spectrum suitable for reprographic applications. The lamp includes a colored envelope (e.g., amber) which is capable of attenuating light below about 500 nanometers. A layer containing a single narrow-band phosphor having a peak emission in the wavelength region of from about 590 to 660 nanometers is disposed on the inner surface of the envelope. The phosphor layer may consist of a mixture the narrow-band phosphor and a predetermined amount of alumina. Preferably, the alumina by weight is within the range of from about 55 percent to about 95 percent by weight of the phosphor.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1989Date of Patent: January 29, 1991Assignee: GTE Products CorporationInventors: Sharon B. Rutfield, Steven C. Schlitt

Patent number: 4967090Abstract: A fluorescent lamp and system for providing cosmetic tanning. The lamp includes a first ultraviolet-emitting phosphor disposed on a portion of the circumference of the interior of an ultraviolet-transmitting glass envelope. A second ultraviolet-emitting phosphor is disposed on the remaining portion the lamp envelope. The lamp further includes bases having electrical contacts extending therefrom and lying in a plane which passes through the demarcation lines formed between the first and second ultraviolet-emitting phosphors. In one embodiment, the proportions of UVB to UVA from the same light source are about 1.6 percent and 4.2 percent. In another aspect of the invention, a suntanning system includes an external reflector positioned adjacent the fluorescent lamp. The external reflector is effective in maintaining approximately the same irradiance level in the UVA region independent of the rotational alignment of the lamp.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1990Date of Patent: October 30, 1990Assignee: GTE Products CorporationInventor: Steven C. Schlitt

Patent number: 4495440Abstract: An arc-extinguishing ampul and a low-pressure arc discharge lamp, such as a fluorescent lamp, having such ampul on each electrode structure, the ampul comprising a thin-walled glass body enclosing an arc-extinguishing gas, at least one electrically conductive support wire, and a heat-conductive coating covering the outer surface of the ampul and portions of the support wire. Upon depletion of the electron-emissive coating on one electrode filament at the end of the useful life of the lamp, the arc discharge is attracted to the ampul by the support wire. The heat of the arc softens and melts the ampul to the point where the arc-extinguishing gas within the ampul escapes and renders the lamp inoperable without loss of the lamp's hermetic seal.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 1982Date of Patent: January 22, 1985Assignee: GTE Products CorporationInventors: Steven C.
