  • Patent number: 9208101
Abstract: A method and system for virtual cache memory extension in a data storage device are disclosed herein. The storage device may include a memory that serves as a cache to a primary memory. The method for the storage device may include maintaining mapping information of one or more logical block addresses associated with data stored in the cache memory and maintaining mapping information of one or more logical block addresses associated with data not stored in the cache memory. Data stored in the cache memory may be selected for eviction when the available capacity of the cache memory changes, e.g., due to storing resume data in a hibernate operation. Data selected for eviction may be transferred to the primary memory but still tracked as being part of a virtual extended cache, and thus can be quickly restored into the cache memory when the resume data is no longer needed.

  • Patent number: 8724245
Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed comprising a head actuated over a disk, the disk comprising a plurality of servo sectors defining a plurality of servo tracks, wherein the servo tracks form a plurality of servo zones. A servo data rate of servo sectors in a first servo zone is different than a servo data rate of servo sectors in a second servo zone. A boundary of a first servo zone overlaps with a boundary of a second servo zone over a transition zone. The servo sectors of the first servo zone are interleaved with the servo sectors of the second servo zone within the transition zone. At least one servo parameter is adjusted when the head is over the transition zone in order to transition between the first servo zone and the second servo zone.

  • Patent number: 8451697
Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed comprising a head actuated over a disk comprising a plurality of spiral tracks. During a seek operation, a demodulation window is opened in response to a window offset during a first revolution of the disk, wherein the demodulation window corresponds to the head approaching a spiral track. A window position error signal (PES) is generated representing a difference between a target framing of the demodulation window around the spiral track crossing and a detected framing of the demodulation window around the spiral track crossing. The window offset is adjusted in response to the first window PES, and the demodulation window is opened in response to the adjusted window offset during a second revolution of the disk.

  • Patent number: 8432629
Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed comprising a head actuated over a disk comprising a plurality of spiral tracks. A first sync frame is first opened in response to a first frame offset during a first revolution of the disk, wherein the first sync frame corresponds to the head approaching a first sync mark in a first spiral track crossing. A first sync frame position error signal (PES) is generated representing a difference between a target framing of the first sync frame around the first sync mark and a detected framing of the first sync frame around the first sync mark. The first frame offset is adjusted in response to the first sync frame PES, and during a second revolution of the disk the first sync frame is second opened in response to the adjusted first frame offset.

  • Patent number: 7667920
Abstract: A method for correcting a track pitch error in servo tracks written on a magnetic recording media coupled with a disk surface, by using a subsequent servo-write pass, comprises propagating servo tracks across the magnetic recording media in a previous servo-write pass. The servo tracks have radial positioning servo code. The servo tracks enable a magnetic transducer to be positioned to at least one radial position on the magnetic recording media. At least one corrected radial reference point is calculated for the track pitch error written on the magnetic recording media, by identifying at least one inconsistency between a mechanical response of an actuator and the track pitch. A corrected location for at least one servo track is identified. At least one new servo track at the corrected location is propagated with the subsequent servo-write pass. Optimum data track distribution across the disk surface and optimum reading and writing of data to and from the magnetic recording media is enabled.
