  • Publication number: 20030031423
Abstract: The present invention relates to a fiber optic device for the optically connecting optical fiber. The device consists of fiber optic connectors holding the terminal ends of optical fiber in ferrules and an adapter for receiving fiber optic connectors. The adapter includes a sleeve within a longitudinal opening which aligns the ferrules and the terminal end of the optical fiber held by the ferrules. Within the sleeve is placed an attenuator which extends across the longitudinal opening in the sleeve and is held at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the opening by slots in the sidewall of the sleeve. The angle at which the attenuator is held may be perpendicular or non-perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve. The sleeve is further prevented from rotating within the adapter by pockets formed in the inner wall of the longitudinal opening engaging extensions of the attenuator beyond the sidewall of the sleeve.

  • Publication number: 20020181888
Abstract: The present invention relates to bulkhead adapters for optically connecting two strands of optical fibers and including a length of optical fiber within the adapter for attenuating signals passing from one fiber to the other. The attenuation optical fiber is held within an attenuation hub inside the housing of the adapter. Attenuation of optical fiber signals transmitted through the adapter may be provided by the optical fiber, by an offset fusion of two optical fibers, by an airgap between two optical fiber segments, by the inclusion of a filter between two optical fiber segments, or by other structures. When an optical fiber with a connector is inserted into the adapter, the optical fiber is placed in optical contact with the attenuation optical fiber of the attenuation hub. The adapter can be inserted through an opening in a bulkhead so that optical fiber from one side of the bulkhead can be attached to optical fiber on the second side of the bulkhead.

  • Patent number: 6419402
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a fiber optic device including a connector housing including a front housing piece, an intermediate housing piece, and a rear housing piece that is non-unitarily connected to the intermediate housing piece. The rear housing piece and the intermediate housing piece define passages that are in general alignment with one another. The fiber optic device also includes a hub positioned within the connector housing. The hub includes a passage that aligns generally with the passage of the intermediate housing piece. The hub is spring biased toward a front end of the connector housing. The fiber optic device further includes a ferrule connected to the hub, and a fiber optic cable. The ferrule defines a passage that extends in general axial alignment with the passage of the hub. A fiber portion of the fiber optic cable is adhesively bonded within the passage of the ferrule. A buffered portion of the fiber optic cable extends through the passage of the rear housing piece.
