    Abstract: A branch processing unit (BPU) is used, in an exemplary embodiment, in a superscalar, superpipelined microprocessor compatible with the x86 instruction set architecture. In one embodiment, the BPU includes a target cache and a separate far target cache--the far target cache stores limits and mode bits for far targets stored in the target cache. For each far COF entry in the target cache, an FTC index field stores an index pointing to the corresponding entry in the far target cache. For far COFs that hit in the target cache, the target cache outputs corresponding far target addressing information and the associated FTC index to indirectly access the far target cache to obtain the associated segment limit information.

    Abstract: A sensor dispensing instrument is adapted to receive a generally circular sensor pack containing a plurality of blood glucose sensors. Each of the sensors are disposed in sensor cavities, each of which is in fluid communication with a corresponding desiccant cavity and has a support wall that assists in directing the sensor as its being ejected from the cavity. The sensor pack is loaded on an indexing disk in the instrument such that when a slide actuator on the instrument is moved toward a testing position, a feed mechanism engaged by the slide actuator moves a knife blade thereon toward one of the sensor cavities. The knife blade pierces a portion of a foil covering the sensor cavity and engages the sensor disposed in the cavity to thereby eject the sensor from the sensor cavity.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for editing a scanned image. The present invention provides for editing of a scanned image in terms of interpretations of graphical objects contained therein. A graphical object can represent a letter, word, line of text, graphic or any other portion of the document image selected by the user. An interpretation embodies a predetermined relationship between graphical objects as well as editing operations that can be performed on the graphical objects. Interpretations belong to one of two classes. A first class, set interpretation, treats graphical objects as an unordered set lying within a document plane. Editing operations in a set interpretation allow a graphical object to be manipulated within in the document plane without disturbing the spatial orientation of other graphical objects. A second class, sequence interpretation, is like a set interpretation except that the set of graphical objects are ordered.

    Abstract: An unplumbed sterilizer (10) with a self-contained heater (34, 35) has a fill system (32) that includes a pump (82) to pump liquid from a sterilizer reservoir (26) to the sterilizing chamber (22). By utilizing the pump (82) in the fill system (32), a precise volume of water is filled into the sterilizing chamber (22) with each sterilizing cycle, and further, the pump pressure flushes the fill system (32) of particles that may otherwise partially or fully clog the fill system (32). A sterilizing chamber drain cycle is executed immediately prior to the fill cycle by operating the pump (82) to pump liquid from the sterilizing chamber (22) to the reservoir (26). The operation of the drain cycle permits the fill cycle to be executed without any residual liquid in the sterilizing chamber (22); and further, the subsequent fill cycle will flush any particles from the fill system (32) introduced by the drain cycle.

    Abstract: A fluid separation system is disclosed for installation within a wellbore that penetrates a production formation and a discharge formation. The system comprises a first pump and a second pump each operatively connected to a means for operation, such as a downhole electric motor, and a fluid separator for separating wellbore fluids from the production formation into a first stream and a lighter second stream. Wellbore fluids are introduced into the first pump, and are then conveyed to an inlet of the fluid separator. The second stream exiting the fluid separator is conveyed to an inlet of the second pump, and from the second pump to the earth's surface. Devices are included, such as wellbore packers, to isolate the discharge formation from the production formation, so that the second stream exiting the fluid separator directly enters the discharge formation.

Prefetch requests (addressing a prefetch block of 16 bytes) are separated into low and high block addresses (addressing split blocks of 8 bytes). The low and high block addresses differ in bit position ?3! designated a bank select bit, where the low block address of an associated prefetch request may be designated by a ?1 or 0! such that a split block associated with a low block address may be allocated into either bank of the target cache (i.e., the low block of a prefetch request can start on an 8 byte alignment rather than the 16 byte alignment).

The process confers superior gray scale capability to the plate and prepares the plate, as later mounted on a printing press (40), to produce printed matter (43) wherein printed image (14") corresponds to the subject image and is characterized by improved gray scale. An exemplary product, as an article of manufacture, is a printing plate with the directly-introduced transfer image. An inventive use is use or operation of the copier directly to make--from subject image on its copy board (31)--the transfer image on the printing plate.

    Abstract: A surgical retractor retracts tissue from a body cavity in which surgery is to be performed. The retractor has a plurality of fingers or blades which extend laterally from a handle. The fingers pivot about a pivot pin between a retracted position and an extended position. Extension is achieved by rotation of a centered control plate relative to the handle. The pivot pin for the fingers is displaced from the axis of the handle, and moves relative to the handle. Each of the fingers has an arcuate slot, and a guide post within the arcuate slots controls pivoting. Because of the distance separating the pivot pin and the axis of the handle, extension of the fingers occurs a distance away from the incision into which the retractor is inserted, and undue trauma to the incision is avoided. Because the pivot point moves relative to the handle, the fingers extend longitudinally during the pivoting motion.
