  • Patent number: 5573751
Abstract: Disclosed herein are agents for enhancing the contrast in an ultrasound image. These agents are extremely small bubbles, or "microbubbles," comprised of specially selected gases. The microbubbles described herein exhibit long life spans in solution and may be produced at a size small enough to traverse the lungs, thus enabling improved ultrasound imaging of the cardiovascular system and other vital organs. Also disclosed herein is a method for selecting gases from which contrast agents may be produced. The method is based on calculations using inherent physical properties of gases and describes a means to associate the properties of a gas with the time for dissolution of a microbubble comprised of the gas.

  • Patent number: 5572302
Abstract: An apparatus for supporting wires in a wire module for use in a scavengeless development system using wire maintaining members that longitudinally support the wires. The tops of the wire maintaining members have grooves that positively position the wires and set a desired wire to wire spacing. The wire maintaining members are integral with the wire module and are part of a wire tensioning system. The wire maintaining members are part of an assembly that allow the wires to be pretensioned to the operable development tension prior to the wire module being mounted to the developer housing. The wire maintaining members also have a unique mounting system which allows the wire module to be rotatably mounted to the developer housing.

  • Patent number: 5572339
Abstract: A scanner housing encloses a rotatable cylindrical drum, the outer surface having opposing rims or hubs which support respective outer edges of a film strip or slide to be scanned. The edges of the film are releasably held flat against respective rims by means of bands contacting respective radially outer edges of the film to maintain them against the respective outer rim surfaces of the drum whereby the film rotates with the drum's rotation past a scanner assembly. The scanner assembly is disposed internally of the housing adjacent one outer side of the drum and includes a linear array scanning transducer. A light source is located adjacent an opposing outer side of the drum at a location substantially diametrically opposed from the scanner assembly. A focusing lens assembly is disposed internally of the drum between the light source and the scanner assembly. The film being carried on the outer circumference of the rotating drum as the drum rotates, passes adjacent the light source.

  • Patent number: 5569019
Abstract: A unitary composite stator vane for a gas turbine engine comprising an aerodynamically configured airfoil section, a foot extending substantially perpendicularly from one end of the airfoil section, and a smoothly contoured transition section interconnecting the airfoil section with the foot. The stator vane is comprised of a composite material including a plurality of compression molded, heat cured plies. The plies include a plurality of centrally located internal plies of reinforcement material of continuous yarns of para-aramid fibers. On each side of the internal plies are plies of resin impregnated graphite fiber material. The graphite fibers are protected by an external steel wire mesh ply covering the leading edges of the vanes. Substantially all of the internal para-aramid reinforcement fibers are discontinuous proximate the transition section between the airfoil section and foot.

  • Patent number: 5568928
Abstract: A video game controller for use with an exercise apparatus. The controller includes a gross motion sensor which is activated by the palm of the user's hand when the user's wrist is rotated. In this way, a "steering" input can be sensed by the controller and forwarded to the video game. The controller further includes a pair of "action" switches which may be conveniently activated by the user's fingers. The controller may be formed as an integral part of the exercise apparatus handle or as a separate member designed for convenient attachment to the handle in a retrofit application.

  • Patent number: 5563720
Abstract: A method, system and process for improving image enhancement tools through the application of expert systems. The improvements are accomplished by the operation of a process in the memory of a processor that enhances an image based on a set of criteria entered by a user. The image is enhanced in at least two ways and the two enhanced images are presented to the user. The user selects the image that appears best and the selected image is thereafter used for subsequent image enhancements according to the user criteria until a final image is created.

  • Patent number: 5562125
Abstract: A two stage electrohydraulic pressure control valve includes a pilot stage for providing regulated pressure at lower flows to a larger main stage that handles the higher control flows to and from a pressure applied clutch or pressure released brake. The regulated pressure from the pilot stage acts on an end of the main stage for controlling the position of the main stage. An energy storage device in the form of either an accumulator or a load piston device is connected to the end of the main stage to permit instantaneous independent movement of the main stage relative to the pilot stage. The energy storage device quickly provides for or accepts displaced fluid from the main stage much faster than the limited flow capacity and response time of the pilot stage. This permits the main stage to quickly adjust to flow changes to the clutch or brake with minimal change in pressure until the pilot stage can respond.

  • Patent number: 5560779
Abstract: There is provided a system for the manufacture of a diamond film. A plasma generator generates a hydrogen atom containing plasma stream into which a hydrocarbon containing gas is fed. The plasma dissociates the hydrocarbon to carbon radicals and carbon which are deposited on a substrate where the carbon crystallizes to a diamond film. The efficiency of the system is increased by heating the hydrogen source gas prior to generation of the plasma. Other means to increase the effectiveness of the system include using a plurality of plasma streams and shaping the plasma stream, A low internal strain, high quality optical film is generated by depositing the carbon on a substrate supported by a heat sink having nonuniform thermal conductivity such that the thermal gradient across the surface of the heat sink is less than about 8.degree. C./centimeter.

  • Patent number: 5559440
Abstract: A line interface circuit (12.sub.1) having a digital interface (18) and an analog interface (20) coupled to the digital interface by a transmission path (23, 26) may be tested by launching a digital value into the digital interface while the analog interface is terminated by termination impedance (35). The digital value launched into the line interface circuit is converted to an analog signal within the circuit which appears across the termination impedance, creating a voltage that is sensed back on the transmission path. This sensed voltage is convened within line interface circuit back to a digital value for output at the digital interface in response to the originally launched digital test value.
