Patent number: 12244896Abstract: “Binge watching” of multiple episodes of a program is improved by the player device automatically skipping repeated portions of the program. Opening and closing credit scenes, for example, can be automatically skipped to thereby allow the viewer to progress through the entire season of programming at an even faster rate than was previously thought possible. Programming to be skipped may be identified by detecting audio or other digital fingerprints in the content itself, for example. Content to be skipped may be identified to the playback device according to anchor points or other references in the programming itself.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2023Date of Patent: March 4, 2025Assignee: DISH Network L.L.C.Inventors: Robert Drew Major, Steven Casagrande

Patent number: 10873778Abstract: Systems, devices and processes reduce the amount of memory or disk space needed to store encoded video content used in adaptive video streaming by eliminating certain portions of the recorded program from one or more copies of the encoded program. Content occurring before or after a scheduled start of a program, for example, can be retained in only a subset of the encoded copies so that the program content is available to be streamed, but only at certain video qualities. Commercials or other less popular portions may also be eliminated in one or more encoded copies. By eliminating the less-likely-to-be-viewed portions of the content from some (but not all) of the encoded copies, the total amount of storage space needed to store the encoded program is reduced without compromising the ability to play back all portions of the recorded program.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 2018Date of Patent: December 22, 2020Assignee: DISH Network L.L.C.Inventor: Steven Casagrande

Systems and Methods for Television Receiving System Setup Including Terrestrial Transmitter Locating
Publication number: 20110096243Abstract: A television receiving device may include a tuner configured to selectively tune a television channel from a first plurality of television channels received from a primary television programming source and a second plurality received from a television programming source other than the primary source, wherein the second plurality is received as over-the-air terrestrial television signals. The device may further include a processor configured to set the tuner to receive the second plurality based on location information of the device and location information of a plurality of over-the-air terrestrial antennas.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 26, 2009Publication date: April 28, 2011Applicant: EchoStar Technologies. Patent number: 7197144Abstract: A system for providing protection against pirating of software product or products or any other digital information being sent over the Internet, or by physical means, to a computer system. The system generates a set of parameters associated to the authorized user's system and uses those parameters to form a value. Then the invention encrypts that value leaving a set of encrypted forms of the value. The set of encrypted values is then sent to the user's system. The original set of parameters are again generated on the user's system and used to decrypt the set of encrypted values sent to the user. If the result of this decryption yields a minimum number of identical values, a quorum is deemed reached, and the invention allows the user to access to the software product. The software product also may have been encrypted using the initial formed value.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 2000Date of Patent: March 27, 2007Assignee: Ethos Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Steven Casagrande
