  • Patent number: 7031726
Abstract: A radiation detection method and apparatus thereof for estimating radiation power received by the mobile station. The locations of nearby base stations and the mobile station are obtained from the broadcast system messages and the location service provided by the service provider, and based on the location information, the radiation power is estimated according to the distances between the base stations and the mobile station. In addition, the radiation estimation process also utilizes the radiation power of monitored base stations constantly measured by the mobile station for cell selection to determine the effects of interference. Based on a preset safety value and the estimated radiation power, the radiation detection device of the present invention automatically issues an alert when entering a high radiation environment.

  • Publication number: 20060058041
Abstract: A cellular device connects with a network of base stations. Each base station covers a corresponding service area, and broadcasts unique identifying information in a standard manner. A portable computing platform is used as a POI database and server for the cellular device, and establishes a communications link with the cellular device. A trip scheduler is provided in the cellular device that interfaces with the POI database server over the communications link to enable a user to extract POI data from the POI database. The POI data includes a POI identifier for a POI, and a related base station identifier that uniquely identifies a target base station having a service area that covers the POI. The cellular device monitors base stations to determine when the cellular device enters into the service area of the target base station, and then provides an alert to the user indicative of the POI.

  • Patent number: 6975872
Abstract: A method of locating a mobile station that is turned off. The method includes turning off the mobile station while keeping a battery of the mobile station intact in the mobile station. The mobile station enters a soft power-off mode after the mobile station has been turned off if the battery of the mobile station has sufficient energy. The mobile station receives paging request messages from at least one base station and the mobile station measures RSSI levels for received paging request messages. The mobile station then selects a current base station for which the mobile station measures a strongest RSSI level. The mobile station handshakes with the current base station to enable the mobile station to camp on the current base station. Next, the mobile station reports its location to the current base station and the current base station informs authorities of the location of the mobile station.

  • Publication number: 20050227666
Abstract: A method of dialing a local emergency telephone number using a mobile station. The mobile station has a database containing a plurality of Local Emergency CAII Numbers (LECAN) corresponding to a specific geographic location, the method includes displaying a list of local emergency services for the current geographic location, selecting one of the local emergency services, and retrieving a first local emergency telephone number associated with the selected local emergency service. The priority of the mobile station connecting to a mobile phone network is then upgraded from basic telephone call priority to emergency telephone call priority and a first telephone connection is made with the first local emergency telephone number using the emergency telephone call priority.

  • Publication number: 20050215259
Abstract: A method for receiving public broadcast services with a wireless device compatible with the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) protocol is disclosed. The method includes performing a radio frequency (RF) scan on all frequencies in at least one predetermined frequency band to identify all possible Broadcast Control Channels (BCCHs), measuring Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) levels for each BCCH, and sorting the BCCHs according to the corresponding RSSI levels. The wireless device next selects a BCCH having a strongest average RSSI level and camps on a cell corresponding to the selected BCCH. The wireless device is then able to receive GSM public broadcast services from a mobile phone network operating the selected BCCH irrespective of whether the wireless device subscribes to the mobile phone network.

  • Patent number: 6888456
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for determining whether an object is moved are provided. The object is disposed in a communication system having many base stations. The apparatus includes a receiver, a controller, and a warning device. During a predetermined period, the apparatus respectively receives and measures signals from each of the base stations to derive a first average value. Meanwhile, a tolerable probability value is inputted. According to the tolerable probability value and the first average value, the apparatus gets a tolerable range. Next, the apparatus continues to receive and measure signals to derive a second average value. Finally, the apparatus determines whether the object is moved in accordance with the second average value and the tolerable range. If moved, the apparatus sends out a warning signal.

  • Publication number: 20040224659
Abstract: The present invention provides a power saving method for a mobile unit in a wireless communication network. The wireless communication network includes a first base station and a second base station. The first base station transmits a first signal having a first signal level to the mobile unit via first broadcast control channel (BCCH). The second base station transmits a second signal having a second signal level to the mobile unit via a second BCCH. The first signal level is stronger than the second signal level. First, the present invention inputs an emergency telephone number. Then, the mobile unit connects with the first base station and disables a cell reselection process to save power.

  • Publication number: 20040220725
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for avoiding route deviation for a moving object in an area of a communication system. The mobile communication system includes a plurality of cells. Each cell has a location area identification data (LAI) relating to location and coverage of each cell. In the present invention, a route information is inputted, and then is mapped with the LAI data to determine cells corresponding to the route information. The present invention detects a position of the object and determines whether the object is in the determined cells. When the object is not in the determined cells, the present invention outputs a warning signal.

  • Publication number: 20040203933
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for determining a nearest base station with respect to a mobile station from M base stations. First, the mobile station compares strengths of M signals received from M base stations with each other to determine a first base station, which has a strongest signal among M signals. Then, P strength differences of the strongest signal with P signals selected from the other (M-1) signals respectively are obtained. Finally, the first base station is determined as being the nearest base station when all strength differences are respectively larger than a predetermined value.

  • Publication number: 20040185824
Abstract: The present invention provides a calling method by a mobile unit. The mobile unit pre-stores a default dialing number, and has a database storing a plurality of primary dialing numbers. Each of the primary dialing numbers corresponds to one geographic location. When a user dials a calling number, the present invention tests if the calling number is identical to the default dialing number. If the calling number is identical to the default dialing number, the present invention retrieving one primary dialing number from the database based upon a current location of the mobile unit. Then, the present invention makes a telephone connection based on the one primary dialing number.

  • Patent number: 6795706
Abstract: 27A central database is provided on an external device, such as a personal data assistant (PDA), that is used for local phone number translation. A communications link is provided between a mobile telephone and the central database to allow accessing and indexing of the central database. The mobile telephone obtains identification information from a base station upon which the mobile telephone is camped. The communications link is used to extract local phone number translation information from the central database by indexing with the identification information to obtain corresponding local phone number translation information. The mobile telephone then provides local phone number translation using the local phone number translation information.
