  • Patent number: 8544077
Abstract: A secure Internet Protocol (IP) telephony system, apparatus, and methods are disclosed. Communications over an IP telephony system can be secured by securing communications to and from a Cable Telephony Adapter (CTA). The system can include one or more CTAs, network servers, servers configured as signaling controllers, key distribution centers (KDC), and can include gateways that couple the IP telephony system to a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Each CTA can be configured as secure hardware and can be configured with multiple encryption keys that are used to communicate signaling or bearer channel communications. The KDC can be configured to periodically distribute symmetric encryption keys to secure communications between devices that have been provisioned to operate in the system and signaling controllers.

  • Patent number: 7856915
Abstract: A portable checkpoint system is disclosed that incorporates a configurable freight container to intercept and inspect an approaching vehicle. The container includes a quadrilateral set of walls connectable to form a rectangular box, first and second ends of the walls, a blast plate disposed within the box, and a receptacle for mounting a device. At least one of the ends includes a door. The blast plate is disposed between two interior surfaces of the quadrilateral set of walls for absorbing shock and shrapnel, such as at an oblique angle. The mounted device is an instrument for measuring a characteristic of the vehicle. Another such device is a lamp for illuminating the vehicle. The checkpoint includes an obstacle to direct the vehicle in traffic flow, and a pair of configurable freight containers as described. The obstacle directs the vehicle towards the zone. The containers are disposed substantially parallel to each other and separated apart to form a zone that enables the vehicle to pass there-between.

  • Patent number: 7789258
Abstract: A portable checkpoint system is disclosed that incorporates a configurable freight container to facilitate transport and conversion for operation. The container is disposable into closed and open configurations. The closed configuration enables the container to be transported. The open configuration enables a vehicle to drive therethrough. In the closed configuration, the container forms a quadrilateral set of walls connectable in a rectangular box. A hinge joins two adjacent walls along a pivotable edge and pivots between perpendicular and coplanar positions corresponding respectively to the closed and open configurations. A joint reversibly connects two walls opposite the adjacent walls along a separable edge, disconnecting from a lock position to an unlock position that correspond respectively to the closed and open configurations. The hinge's perpendicular position disposes the two adjacent walls to be mutually perpendicular at the pivotable edge and forms the rectangular box.

  • Patent number: 7006446
Abstract: Duplicate participants (e.g., cloned subscriber units) (274) are detected in a communication network, such as a hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) cable television network or the like, by monitoring the physical layer of the network to detect transmission differences between such units. The subscriber units (14, 16, 18, 274, 276) may be cable modems that transmit upstream signals with associated identifiers to a headend (10, 200), e.g., to access the Internet or for telephony. Measured characteristics of the upstream signals can include: (1) propagation time (235), (2) frequency (240), (3) power (245), and (4) spectral characteristics (250). For propagation time, the reception time of the upstream message can be compared to a headend clock (215) and also to other messages with the same modem ID. For spectral characteristics, adjustment coefficients can be provided to the units to normalize the spectrum of the upstream signal to a baseline spectrum.

  • Patent number: 6285681
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for communicating data packets in variable length bursts over a physical layer in a multilayer data communication scheme. Each burst contains information data (40, 50, 60, 64, 74, 78, 82) and overhead (30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 42, 44, 62, 66, 76, 80, 84). The overhead includes forward error control (FEC) data (42, 62, 66, 76, 80, 84). Different burst modes (FIG. 2, 3, 4, 5) are provided to enable a trade-off to be made between bandwidth efficiency and data transmission robustness. The burst modes provide different combinations of modulation (such as QPSK and 16-QAM), symbol rates, FEC coding levels and frame and preamble structure. The apparatus is particularly suitable for use in upstream communications over hybrid fiber coax cable television plants.
