  • Publication number: 20020149598
Abstract: Viewing angle characteristics of a liquid crystal display (LCD) are improved by reducing the number of subpixels in an image with mid-tone luminance values. In a preferred embodiment, a first table of entries associating subpixel intensity values and subpixel luminance values for a LCD in at least one viewing angle direction is provided. A target intensity value is determined from the first table, corresponding to the average subpixel luminance over a small number of adjacent subpixels. A second table of entries associates the target intensity values with intensity values above and below the target. The adjacent subpixel intensity values are modified according to the second table, thereby reducing the number of subpixels with mid-tone luminance values. The subpixel data is preferably processed within a portion of an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), contained within the display module.

  • Patent number: 6459554
Abstract: A network protector includes a coil drive circuit for the trip actuator which operates as a current limiter to protect a trip coil with limited impedance at the upper limit of network voltage while assuring operation at network voltages of less than 10% rated voltage. A comparator provides gate drive current to a FET connected in series with the trip coil as long as coil current is below a reference voltage proportional to a specified maximum value of coil current. When the specified value of coil current is reached, the FET is latched off until the network protector is tripped open again.

  • Publication number: 20020125208
Abstract: A micro-electro-mechanical structure including a semiconductor layer mounted to an annular support structure via an isolation layer wherein the semiconductor layer is micromachined to form a suspended body having a plurality of suspension projections extending from the body to the rim and groups of integral projections extending toward but spaced from the rim between said suspension projections. Each projection in said groups has a base attached to the body and a tip proximate the rim. The structure includes a plurality of inward projections extending from and supported on the rim and toward the body. Each such projection has a base attached to the rim and a tip proximate the body; wherein the grouped projections and the inward projections are arranged in an interdigitated fashion to define a plurality of proximate projection pairs independent of the suspension elements such that a primary capacitive gap is defined between the projections of each projection pair.

  • Publication number: 20020124201
Abstract: A method for handling a log repair action in a logically partitioned (LPAR) multiprocessing system is disclosed. The LPAR multiprocessing system includes a plurality of partitions. The method and system comprise recording the log repair action on one of the plurality of partitions. The method and system further include sending the recording of the log repair action to a single log repair action source, the recording including the log repair action and the partition identifier of the one of the plurality of partitions. The method and system further includes sending the log repair action to each of the other of the plurality of partitions from the single service. Accordingly, a system and method in accordance with the present invention solves the problem of having to perform the same action in multiple partitions by using a notification scheme with a single focal point of control.

  • Patent number: 6443627
Abstract: A high density optical connecting block 100 is mounted in a relatively thin, flat panel 10, and is constructed as an array of identical cells 110 that are linked together as a one-piece unit. The cells have a front-to-back depth that is greater than ten millimeters for imparting flexural rigidity to the panel. The array includes at least twelve cells that are arranged in two or more rows and two or more columns. Each cell has a front side that is shaped to receive and interlock with a duplex optical connector 50, and a back side that is shaped to receive and interlock with two simplex optical plugs 20. The duplex connector is a unifying structure that yokes a pair of simplex optical plugs 20-1, 20-2 into a duplex configuration.

  • Patent number: 6393416
Abstract: Complex languages such as bidirectional or double byte character set (e.g., Unicode) languages are supported in tier-0 devices despite the limited storage resources common for such devices. A phrase dictionary is built within a host data processing system which is capable of communicating with the tier-0 device and which supports complex language input. Commonly used text strings are added to the phrase dictionary utilizing any characters. The contents of the phrase dictionary are then transferred, along with sparse font information containing only the glyphs necessary for characters within the phrase dictionary, to the tier-0 device. Since font information for only a subset of all possible characters is stored in the tier-0 device, a much smaller amount of storage resources are consumed. On the tier-0 device, the phrase dictionary is invoked by a user control such as a pop-up, and the desired phrase may then be selected for entry into a data entry field.

  • Patent number: 6323875
Abstract: A method is provided for rendering display blocks on a video display device of a computer processing system having an existing display driver. The method includes the step of assigning each of a plurality of n video adapters to an mth display subregion of the display device. A call to a draw function of the existing display driver is received. The draw function corresponds to a particular shape to be drawn and includes starting and ending coordinates. The mth display subregion that drawing of the shape is to begin on is calculated from the starting coordinates. A function of the existing display driver is called by calling an address stored in the filter driver of a routine corresponding to the called function. The called function corresponds to the received draw function. A segment of the shape is rendered on the calculated mth display subregion by the nth display adapter corresponding thereto. A traversal is made to the nth video adapter corresponding to a next segment of the shape.

  • Publication number: 20010034952
Abstract: The lap siding installation tool is a reusable tool that allows one person to easily handle and install horizontal lap siding on the side of a house or other similar structure. The preferred embodiment of this invention is a simple squared “Z” shaped bracket with spring mechanism that will grip the lower edge of the siding board to be installed. The upper part of the tool provides a “ledge” or “lip” on the backside of the board which will rest on the upper edge of a previously installed board. This “ledge” is in a defined position above the lower edge of the siding board to be installed such that a consistent overlap of the boards is maintained per the lap siding manufacturer's specifications. The board is then fixed to the structure in two (2) places along its upper edge, normally by nails or screws. The tools can then be easily removed by pulling outward on the lower edge of the board a small distance allowing the tools to be pulled downward off of the board.
