The die tooling includes a first die member defining a cavity and a second die member having a protruding portion designed to be inserted in the cavity of the first die member to define a mold cavity therebetween that defines a shape of the oil pan. A first die insert is used along with the first die member and the second die member to form oil pans for use with an engine having an oil cooler. An alternative second die insert is used in place of the first die insert along with the first die member and the second die member to form oil pans for use with an engine without an oil cooler.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 2013Date of Patent: April 5, 2016Assignee: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS LLCInventors: Steven G. Patent number: 8904988Abstract: A vertically disposed oil pan baffle includes a body having first and second opposing side walls joined by a third wall, and an opposing fourth wall. Each of the first and second side walls is configured to conform with first and second internal surfaces of an oil pan. A metering opening is formed in one of the third and fourth walls. The metering opening is configured and disposed to control a rate of flow of oil through the vertically disposed oil pan baffle.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 2013Date of Patent: December 9, 2014Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventors: Steven G. Patent number: 8505520Abstract: An engine assembly includes an engine structure, an intake air assembly and a crankcase ventilation line assembly. The engine structure defines a cylinder bore, an intake port in communication with the cylinder bore, and a crankcase. The air intake assembly is in communication with the intake port. The crankcase ventilation line assembly includes a fresh air line and an oil surge protection device. The fresh air line is in communication with the crankcase and the air intake assembly and provides fresh air to the crankcase. The oil surge protection device is in communication with the fresh air line and defines an oil obstruction inhibiting oil flow to the air intake assembly while allowing air flow between the crankcase and the air intake assembly.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2011Date of Patent: August 13, 2013Assignee: GM Global Technology Operations LLCInventors: Thomas A. Spix, Steven G. Bryde

Publication number: 20120199095Abstract: A gasket for sealing between a cylinder head and a camshaft cover includes a seal portion that defines a first region and a second region. The first region seals a perimeter of a camshaft chamber, and the second region seals a perimeter of a PCV chamber. A membrane extends across the second region to define a baffle for the PCV chamber that prevents oil from sloshing up from the crankcase into the PCV chamber. The membrane is integrally formed with the seal portion from the same seal material.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 8, 2011Publication date: August 9, 2012Applicant: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS LLCInventors: Steven G. Patent number: 8157035Abstract: A method of operating an engine control system includes reducing pressures within cylinders of an engine based on an auto start command signal including: receiving a torque request signal; calculating a powertrain output torque; and controlling air flow to the engine based on the powertrain output torque. During a startup of the engine: electric motor torque is increased to a predetermined level and reduced to increase a current speed of the engine; combustion torque of the engine is activated and increased after the current speed is within a predetermined range and a manifold absolute pressure is less than a predetermined level; and the electric motor torque is increased based on a crankshaft output torque signal to increase a crankshaft output torque subsequent to the reducing of the electric motor torque and while performing the activating of the combustion torque.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 2009Date of Patent: April 17, 2012Inventors: Christopher E. Whitney, Steven G. Bryde, R. Travis Schwenke, John L. Lahti, Ning Jin, Birendra P. Bhattarai, Cheryl A. Williams, James B Nicholson

Publication number: 20100038158Abstract: A control system for an engine includes an engine control module (ECM) that operates in a first mode and a second mode. The ECM generates an idle speed signal and a transmission load signal that is based on an idle speed of the engine. The hybrid control module (HCM) increases electric motor torque to increase a current speed of the engine based on the idle speed signal and the transmission load signal. The HCM controls the current speed when in the first mode. The ECM controls the current speed when in the second mode. The HCM transfers control of the current speed to the ECM when at least one of the current speed matches the idle speed and a combustion torque output of the engine is equal to a requested crankshaft output torque.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 13, 2009Publication date: February 18, 2010Applicant: GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS, INC.Inventors: Christopher E. Patent number: 7004471Abstract: A radial lip seal including an annular support with a radially extending portion having an inner periphery. An annular seal lip formed of elastomeric material such as polytetrafluoroethylene is connected to the inner periphery. The lip has an inner side adapted to seal a circumferential surface of a shaft and an outer side. The outer side of the lip has a plurality of grooves or protrusions to vary the diameter of the lip. The varied diameter creates a substantial leak between the outer side of the lip and the circumferential surface. The leak created is sufficient to be detected by a low-pressure air test.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 2003Date of Patent: February 28, 2006Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Steven G.
