The 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole may be substituted in the 2-position by hydrocarbyl, terpene, polymeric and succinate residues. The compounds possess antiwear and antioxidant characteristics.

    Abstract: Disclosed are novel compounds prepared by reacting 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, aliphatic or aromatic aldehyde and alkylated phenol in the molar ratio of 1:1:1 to 2:2:1. The 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole may be substituted in the 2-position by terpene, polymeric and succinate residues. The compounds are effective antiwear agents and antioxidants when incorporated into lubricating compositions.
