Abstract: Management of the network impact caused by a digital transmitter, such as a multifunction peripheral (an MFP), delays file transmission until available network bandwidth is sufficient to prevent adverse network impact. In one implementation, a resource determination module determines resource availabilities, including disk space remaining on the digital transmitter and available network bandwidth. A file priority determination module prioritizes files contained in a file library on the digital transmitter for transmission over a network. A store vs. send decision module determines if a highest priority file should be sent over the network, given the resource availabilities.

Abstract: Digital transmitter distribution list maintenance allows discovery of invalid email addresses prior to their actual use in the distribution of digital files, and aids in the replacement of invalid addresses with valid addresses. In one implementation, a CPU resource evaluator module determines that the available CPU resources of the digital transmitter exceed a threshold value, typically indicating that the digital transmitter is substantially idle. An email query module queries email servers to determine if email addresses on a distribution list are valid. Where an address is invalid, an administrator messaging module sends an automated email to the administrator of the email server asking for an updated email address. Where an updated address is available, an address update module replaces the invalid email address with the updated email address.

Abstract: Methods for establishing and providing secure communication between a device and a computer system are described. A representative method includes: establishing a secure communication link between the device and a web server by utilizing a security protocol; accessing a programming process located on the web server; sending security information to the programming process, wherein the security information is provided to a computer system by programming calls made from the programming process; and receiving a response from the computer system via the programming process. Systems, devices, and other methods are also provided.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for archiving data processed by digital sender and other like devices are provided. By way of example, a removable data storage media device can be added to a digital sender device. Then the digital sender device will be able to optically scan an object to form corresponding scanned object data, provide recipient address data, generate an outgoing message data using the recipient address data, output the message data, and also store the message data using the removable data storage device.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for encrypting an image produced from physical information. The physical information may be associated with a physical tag that identifies a public key. The physical information may be digitized to create a digital image, and the physical tag may be digitized to create a digital tag that is readable to identify the public key. The digital tag may be read to identify the public key, and then the image encrypted with the identified public key.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods for accessing network data associated with a document are disclosed. According to one embodiment, the method may comprise the steps of converting at least a portion of the document to electronic format with a digital capture input device that is operatively associated with a network, the at least a portion of the document having one or more indicia thereon, analyzing the at least a portion of the document in electronic format to obtain the one or more indicia, using the one or more indicia to locate the network data that is being maintained at another device connected to the network, and accessing the network data.

Abstract: Document tracking methods and system therefor. Preferred embodiments may comprise sending a document from a multifunction device to a network destination, and sending a tracking component for the document from the multifunction device to a receipt service. The receipt service may generate a return receipt based at least in part on the tracking component when the document is at the network destination to acknowledge receipt of the document by the network destination.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods for displaying network data with an appliance that is operatively associated with a network are disclosed. According to one embodiment, the method may comprise the steps of receiving network data at an appliance that is operatively associated with a network from another device connected to the network, and displaying at least a portion of the network data on electronic display apparatus that is operatively associated with the appliance and that allows for user interaction with and operation of the appliance. Electronically displaying data is not a primary function of the appliance.

Abstract: Methods for providing a remote document history repository and multifunction device therefor. Preferred embodiments of the invention may comprise sending a document from a multifunction device, and recording delivery data for the sent document in the remote document history repository when the document is sent from the multifunction device. Accordingly, the delivery data is accessible from the remote document history repository independent of the multifunction device.

Abstract: A solution to accurately aligning a read-write head over a previously written data track on both a write protected and not write protected tape is disclosed. A control unit, preferably a programmed microprocessor, electronically provides a sequence of control outputs to move the tape and step the head to locate an edge of the tape. The control unit then moves the head a fixed distance to be over a selected data track. A threshold circuit controls the readout of data from the head of the tape in such a way as to improve edge find reliability.
