  • Patent number: 7690664
Abstract: A trailer slider system includes a body rail that slides longitudinally relative to a suspension frame side rail. One of the rails includes holes that provide multiple suspension positions. The trailer slider system also includes a pin connection assembly having a pin that is arranged to extend into one of the holes in a locked position and retract out of the hole in an unlocked position. A cam is coupled for movement with the pin connection assembly. A tube is coupled with the cam to rotate as the pin moves between the locked and unlocked positions. A pneumatic actuator is coupled with the tube for selectively rotating the tube to move the cam which in turn moves the pin, between the locked and unlocked positions.

  • Patent number: 7604248
Abstract: A sliding suspension includes a plurality of locking pins that are selectively moved between extended and retracted positions to allow adjustment of the sliding suspension relative to a trailer frame structure. A lever is fixed to a tube that is supported by a cross-member of a slider frame. A cam is supported on the tube for rotational movement relative to the tube. Laterally spaced locking pins each include a pin connection link that is coupled to the cam. Each locking pin includes a single compression spring, and each pin connection link includes a slot, which cooperate with each other to provide independent pin extension at each pin location. A torsion spring is coaxial with the tube and includes one spring end that is coupled to the lever and another spring end that is coupled to the cam. The torsion spring allows the lever to be decoupled from the locking pins if one or more pins are stuck such that the pull handle can be pulled and locked into place to allow adjustment.

  • Patent number: 7207593
Abstract: A tractor-trailer slider includes spaced apart longitudinal side rails having control arm supports extending downwardly from the side rails for supporting the slider. Portions of the longitudinal side rails and the control arms supports are integrated using one or more common plates. Lightening holes and edge of the slider are flanged to reinforce the walls. Coining and ribbing are also used for additional reinforcement. Lateral cross-members extend between the longitudinal side rails. The lateral cross-members have tabs on opposing ends that are received in an interlocking relationship with complementary elongated slots in the longitudinal side rails. Air spring supports arranged at forward and rearward portions of the slider are secured to the longitudinal side rails, the control arm supports, and the lateral cross-members to provide a structurally rigid frame. The air spring supports provide spaced apart air spring mounting pads.

  • Patent number: 7097192
Abstract: A slider locking pin control receives feedback of the actual position of the locking pins. If the locking pins are not engaged in the trailer frame rails, then the interlock valve will vent air to release a parking brake. Once the locking pins are engaged, the interlock valve will allow the flow of air to release the parking brakes. If the vehicle operator attempts to move the vehicle, but the locking pins are not engaged, the operator will be unable to release the parking brakes. This will prevent movement of the trailer until the locking pins are engaged. The interlock valve is placed downstream of a spring brake control valve and pressurized air reservoir, such that the pressurized air reservoir can still receive pressurized air to charge, and provide air for use by various components on the trailer.

  • Publication number: 20040178601
Abstract: A suspension assembly comprises a strut mounted on a vehicle body for supporting a wheel. A first seat is mounted on the vehicle body. A first spring is mounted between the first seat and a second seat and has a coil wherein the coil extends a long a first axis. A second spring applies a biasing force to the strut along a second axis transverse to the first axis. The second spring is operatively connected to the vehicle body and the strut.

  • Publication number: 20040169323
Abstract: A MacPherson strut assembly is provided that has a hydraulic cylinder with a fluid chamber. A piston is arranged in the chamber, and a rod extends from the piston. A lower spring seat is supported on the hydraulic cylinder, and an upper spring seat is supported on the rod. A coil spring is arranged between the spring seats to produce a desired spring loading. In one embodiment, a compliant isolator having a sloped profile is arranged on the lower spring seat to produce an uneven spring loading. In another embodiment, a spring seat isolator may include materials of a different stiffness to produce uneven spring loading. An isolator may also be used between coils of the spring so that the compression on one side of the spring is limited more that the opposite side to produce uneven loading.

  • Publication number: 20040169324
Abstract: A suspension assembly is provided that includes a strut connected between a lower control arm and a portion of the vehicle frame or body. This strut includes a hydraulic cylinder and rod disposed therein. A first spring seat is arranged on the hydraulic cylinder, and a second spring seat is arranged on the rod spaced from the other spring seat. A spring is arranged between the spring seats to provide a desired suspension load characteristic. At least one of the spring seats extends circumferentially about its connection to either the rod or hydraulic cylinder less than 360°. Since the spring engages the spring seat less than 360°, a non-uniform force is produced that generates a moment in a direction opposite the moment created by the suspension geometry. In this manner, the friction force at the bearing surface is minimized or eliminated.

  • Patent number: 6719315
Abstract: A trailer suspension slider is provided that includes a suspension bogey. A trailer is supported on the suspension bogey and is longitudinally movable between a plurality of position relative to the suspension bogey. The trailer includes a stop bar to prevent the bogey from sliding out from underneath the trailer during braking if the pins are disengaged. A locking pin mechanism is movable between a locked position in which the locking mechanism couples the suspension bogey and the trailer in one of the plurality of positions and an unlocked position in which the trailer can move relative to the suspension bogey. The suspension bogey may collide violently with the stop bar when braking from a relatively low speed when the pins are unlocked. To this end, an energy absorption device is supported on either the trailer or the suspension bogey. The energy absorption device collapses in response to the stop bar engaging either the energy absorption device or the suspension bogey.

  • Publication number: 20030159485
Abstract: A coil spring forming system allows for forming reduced diameter ends at both ends of a coil spring in a single forming process. A rotating member supports one end of the coil spring and preferably includes a die portion that establishes a configuration of that end of the coil spring. A pitch controlling device guides the coil stock longitudinally along the axis of the spring as the rotating member rotates to establish the desired pitch of the coil spring. A moving mandrel member is guided along an axis of the coil spring so that the mandrel member and the pitch controlling member establish the desired diameter of the spring at the corresponding portion of the spring. The mandrel member preferably has a forming surface with a varying outside dimension so that, depending on the placement of the mandrel relative to the coil stock and the pitch controlling member, the diameter of the resulting coil spring can be varied along the length of the spring.

  • Publication number: 20030159486
Abstract: A coil spring forming system includes a mandrel having at least a portion that is selectively expandable so that a central portion of a resulting coil spring has a larger dimension than reduced diameter end sections of the spring. In one example, a plurality of coil shaping surfaces are supported relative to a central portion of the mandrel using a plurality of linkages. The coil shaping surfaces are moved using an actuator (i.e., hydraulic or pneumatic) between expanded and contracted positions to selectively vary the largest outside dimension of the mandrel. In one example, the coil shaping surfaces are spaced apart from each other in the expanded position. In another example, the coil shaping surfaces are arranged such that the mandrel has a generally continuous outer periphery when the surfaces are in the expanded position.
