    Abstract: Translation means is provided for translating positional movement of the cutting tool [56] of a cutting machine [10] to a digital readout assembly [60] provided for monitoring the relative positions of the workpiece support means [14] and the cutting tool support [55] in a direction parallel to the positional movement. The translation means comprises a reader mounting [31] for mounting the position reader [15] of a digital readout assembly supported by a carrier assembly [16] which carries the reader [15] whereby it may move with the carrier assembly [16] or relative thereto in a direction parallel to the positional movement. Drive means such as a precision push-pull cable drive [20] is provided for translating the positional movement of the cutting tool [56] to movement of the reader mounting [31] relative to the carrier assembly [16].
