Publication number: 20130116631Abstract: An adapter is placed between the needle and a conventional fluid store, or medical line. The end of the adapter that connects to the needle assembly is formed to have a configuration that is complementary to that of the hub of the needle assembly, so that the adapter and the needle hub may be readily mated to each other. The other end of the adapter is formed to have another configuration, for example a conventional luer, that is readily connectable to a conventional fluid store, such as a syringe that has a conventional luer. The adapter is formed by inter-fitting two elements to effect an integral locking mechanism to prevent the uncoupling of the fluid store and the adapter, once they are securely coupled.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 14, 2012Publication date: May 9, 2013Applicant: SMITHS MEDICAL ASD, INC.Inventors: Lynn A. Ziman, Steven Huu Nguyen

Patent number: 8061007Abstract: A fixed needle syringe has a syringe barrel with its distal portion modified to accept a needle protective housing. In particular, the distal portion is formed with the a groove dimensioned to accept a collar that is attached to the housing. The inside surface of the collar is provided with a number of flanges that fit within the groove formed at the distal portion of the syringe barrel of the fixed needle syringe. Protrusions are provided at the inside surface of the collar to frictionally act against the syringe barrel, so that the needle protective housing does not freely rotate, but is rotatable relative to the syringe barrel by the application of a predetermined torque to either the collar or the housing attached thereto. An internal hook is provided in the housing to grasp the needle of the syringe, when the housing is pivoted to cover the needle extending from the needle hub of the syringe.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2007Date of Patent: November 22, 2011Assignee: Smiths Medical ASD, Inc.Inventors: Roddi James Simpson, Steven Huu Nguyen

Patent number: 7591800Abstract: To prevent fluid collected at a contaminated needle from being splattered to the environment when the housing of a needle protection device is pivoted to enclose the needle, a bias member is provided in the needle protective housing to provide damping for the needle as the needle is moved within the housing. By damping the movement of the needle relative to the needle housing, splattering of the fluid that results from the jerky movements of the needle due to sudden acceleration/deceleration of the needle relative to the housing are absorbed and/or suppressed.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2003Date of Patent: September 22, 2009Assignee: Smiths Medical ASD, Inc.Inventor: Steven Huu Nguyen

Patent number: 6835190Abstract: A needle device, possibly in the form of a butterfly or IV needle, has a housing with an orthogonal passage to the bore of the housing. A key that has a non-uniform opening with spaces defined by the opposing inner walls of its two extending legs is inserted into the passage. By positioning the key at different placement locations relative to the passage so that the different dimensioned spaces of the opening become aligned with the bore of the housing, the needle assembly can be selectively retained at at least a first position whereby the needle is extended out of the housing, and a second position whereby the needle is permanently retracted within the housing after use.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 2002Date of Patent: December 28, 2004Assignee: Smiths Medical ASD, Inc.Inventor: Steven Huu Nguyen
