  • Publication number: 20130269654
Abstract: A method of controlling a diesel engine includes sensing a speed of the diesel engine, and closing a throttle of the diesel engine when the sensed speed of the diesel engine is equal to or greater than a maximum allowable engine speed to prevent oxygen from entering an intake manifold of the diesel engine, thereby preventing combustion and stopping the operation of the diesel engine. An Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is actuated to regulate circulation of exhaust gas from the diesel engine through the intake manifold to control pressure within the intake manifold to prevent damage to other engine components from excessive positive or negative pressure.

  • Patent number: 8397500
Abstract: A control system for an engine that includes a turbocharger includes a restriction estimation module and an engine protection module. The restriction estimation module estimates restriction of airflow through an air filter of the engine based on a comparison between measured and modeled temperatures at an outlet of a compressor of the turbocharger. The engine protection module, based on the estimated airflow restriction, at least one of controls turbocharger boost, controls turbocharger airflow, controls a fueling rate of the engine, and generates a warning signal for a driver of a vehicle.

  • Patent number: 8387384
Abstract: An intake control system comprises an estimation module and a turbocharger control module. The estimation module receives one of a first pressure within an intake manifold measured by a manifold pressure sensor and a second pressure measured by a pressure sensor at a location between a compressed air charge cooler and a throttle valve. The estimation module estimates the other one of the first and second pressures based on the received one of the first and second pressures. The turbocharger control module controls output of a turbocharger based on the estimate of the other one of the first and second pressures.

  • Publication number: 20130047604
Abstract: In one exemplary embodiment of the invention, an internal combustion engine includes a turbocharger configured to receive an air flow and a first exhaust flow from the internal combustion engine and a supercharger downstream of the turbocharger configured to receive a compressed air charge from the turbocharger. The engine further includes an exhaust gas recirculation circuit receiving a second exhaust flow from the internal combustion engine and supplying the second exhaust flow to the compressed air charge upstream of the supercharger, wherein the second exhaust flow and compressed air charge comprise an exhaust-air mixed flow received by the internal combustion engine.
