  • Patent number: 9201988
Abstract: A process and system for generating a specification for customized devices, such as rehabilitation or assistive devices, including prostheses and orthoses, or sports padding or equipment. A digital model, which is fully parameterized at least for characterizing clinical shape characteristics and functional characteristics of the device, is populated with a plurality of design parameter values and 3-dimensional coordinates of captured and calculated virtual landmarks to construct a customized model corresponding to the specification. The customized device may be manufactured based upon the specification. A system connected to a computer aided manufacturing system may generate instructions for automatically fabricating the device. In embodiments with standardized design parameter values, the customized model may be constructed without involving a human operator.

Date of Patent: December 1, 2015
    Assignee: UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE

  • Patent number: 8538570
Abstract: A process and system for fitting, customizing and manufacturing an orthosis for a subject. 3-dimensional coordinates for a plurality of landmarks corresponding to anatomical characteristics of the subject, means for attachment of the orthosis to the subject, and a reference plane are digitally acquired. Then, coordinates of one or more virtual landmarks corresponding to one or more anatomical joint centers or joint projection locations are calculated. The landmarks are clinically aligned in a reference position of one of the anatomical joint centers and a customized digital model of the orthosis is created using the clinically aligned landmarks. Finally, the orthosis is fabricated using a computer aided manufacturing process, based upon an output from the customized digital model.

  • Patent number: 5235416
Abstract: A system is provided for performing simultaneous bilateral measurements on a subject in motion at a test location. The system employs a plurality of observed targets attached to the moving subject, the targets being viewed simultaneously by each of two cameras disposed on opposite sides of the subject. Each of the cameras has associated therewith a light source emitting a light of a selected wavelength, the wavelengths for the two cameras being deliberately selected to be different enough to enable each camera to image the light source of the other without corruption of the observed data. The simultaneously operating two camera units may be computer controlled in preprogrammed manner or may be controlled by the operation of a manual control panel. In either case, the overall intensity of the two light sources providing illumination at the two selected different wavelengths facilitates the provision of illumination which avoids confusion by reflectance from the subject at other than the selected targets.
