  • Publication number: 20190375501
Abstract: A UAV in which electric power is generated for an electric load from differentials in electric field strengths within a vicinity of powerlines includes: a plurality of electrodes separated and electrically insulated from one another for enabling differentials in voltage resulting from differentials in electric field strength experienced thereat; and electrical components electrically connected therewith and configurable to establish one or more electric circuits whereby voltage differentials causes a current to flow through the established electric circuit for powering an electric load. Preferably, the UAV includes a control assembly having one or more voltage-detector components configured to detect relative voltages of the electrodes; and a processor enabled to configure—based on the detected voltages and based on voltage and electric current specifications for powering the electric load—one or more of the electrical components to establish an electric circuit for powering the electric load.

  • Publication number: 20190375297
Abstract: An apparatus mountable to a tower for detecting positional change of the tower includes a sensor component for detecting a change in inclination of the powerline tower; a communication component for communicating an alert regarding a change in inclination of the powerline tower; electrodes separated and electrically insulated from each other for enabling a differential in voltage at the electrodes resulting from a differential in electric field strength experienced at the electrodes when within a vicinity of powerlines; and electrical components electrically connected with the electrodes and configured to establish a circuit. The differential in voltage between the electrodes causes electric current to flow through the electric circuit for powering the device, including the sensor and the communication component. In alternative embodiments, a pathway to ground is provided, whereby a differential in voltage between one or more of the electrodes and ground causes electric current flow for powering the device.

  • Patent number: 10493851
Abstract: In accordance with a preferred embodiment, a charging station for charging of a UAV within a vicinity of powerlines includes an interface for electric coupling with the UAV for charging of a rechargeable battery of the UAV; a power supply having first and second electrodes separated and electrically insulated from each other for enabling a differential in voltage at the first and second electrodes resulting from a differential in electric field strength experienced at the first and second electrodes when within the vicinity of the powerlines; and electrical components electrically connected with the first and second electrodes and configured to establish a circuit with the rechargeable battery of the UAV when electronically coupled with the interface. The differential in voltage between the first and second electrodes causes electric current to flow through the electric circuit for charging the battery of the UAV.

  • Patent number: 10491021
Abstract: Apparatus for generating electric power within vicinity of powerlines using varying electric fields and an electrical pathway to ground are disclosed. Such apparatus preferably include, for example, UAVs, charging stations, and power strips mountable to a powerline transmission tower. Methods and systems utilizing such apparatus further are disclosed. The electrical pathway to ground may include an interface that is tethered to a UAV and that is dragged along a shield wire behind the UAV as the UAV travels along the powerlines. The electrical pathway to ground alternatively may include an electrical connection to a ground of a support structure of the powerlines when the apparatus is a power strip mounted to the support structure.

  • Patent number: 8280652
Abstract: An apparatus, method, and system for measuring the magnetic field produced by phase conductors in multi-phase power lines. The magnetic field measurements are used to determine the current load on the conductors. The magnetic fields are sensed by coils placed sufficiently proximate the lines to measure the voltage induced in the coils by the field without touching the lines. The x and y components of the magnetic fields are used to calculate the conductor sag, and then the sag data, along with the field strength data, can be used to calculate the current load on the line and the phase of the current. The sag calculations of this invention are independent of line voltage and line current measurements. The system applies a computerized fitter routine to measured and sampled voltages on the coils to accurately determine the values of parameters associated with the overhead phase conductors.

  • Patent number: 7211234
Abstract: The present invention is directed to lanthanide vanadate crystals having the formula LnVO4, wherein Ln is selected from La, Nd, Ce, Pr, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Y, and combinations of at least two thereof, made by a hydrothermal method for a wide variety of end-use applications. The present method requires reacting a source of Ln3+ ions and a source of VO43+ ions, wherein Ln is selected from the group consisting of La, Nd, Ce, Pr, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Y and combinations of at least two thereof, in an aqueous solution at a temperature of from about 350° C. to about 600° C. and at a pressure of from about 8 kpsi to about 40 kpsi, the aqueous solution comprising hydroxide ions at a concentration of from about 0.01 to about 5 molarity. Specifically, when made by the present hydrothermal method, single crystals of sufficient size for use in a variety of optical applications are readily formed.

  • Patent number: 6776522
Abstract: Apparatus for monitoring the temperature of a high voltage conductor includes an electrically and thermally conductive fixture for attachment to a high voltage conductor, and a high voltage insulator having a high voltage end and a reference potential end. The insulator is connected at the high voltage end to the fixture. The insulator contains a fiber optic cable in a fiber optic cable passageway from the reference potential end to the high voltage end. The cable extends beyond the insulator. An optical temperature sensor head is optically coupled to the cable the high voltage end. The sensor head includes a sensor crystal which transmits light that varies with temperature of the sensor crystal. An electrically and thermally conductive enclosure enclosing the sensor head is supported in the fixture for thermally conductive contact with the high voltage conductor effective to couple the temperature of the high voltage conductor to the sensor crystal.
