Patent number: 8578683Abstract: Packaging tools, which, in various embodiments, are adapted to assist a user in applying material from a roll of packaging material (e.g., packing tape, stretch wrap or shrink wrap) to an item or group of items. The packaging tool is typically adapted to move between: (1) a first orientation in which the packaging tool does not substantially restrict the rotation of the roll of packaging material adjacent the packaging tool; and (2) a second orientation in which the packaging tool does substantially restrict (e.g., prevent) the rotation of the roll of stretch wrap tool adjacent the packaging tool. A user typically maintains the packaging tool in the first orientation as the user wraps the packaging material about an item. The user may then move the packaging tool into the second orientation, which allows the user to pull the packaging material tight and separate the applied length of packaging material from the roll.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 2011Date of Patent: November 12, 2013Assignee: United Parcel Service of America, Inc.Inventor: Steven L. Publication number: 20130229697Abstract: A multi-spectral holographic security marker is made by a novel method according to the invention involving a replay frequency shift to one or more final replay frequencies of a part or parts only of a recorded image plane volume hologram. The marker comprises an optional surface hologram and an image plane volume hologram. The volume hologram is divided into discrete areas which have mutually different final replay frequencies. The security information carried by the marker is a combination of the size and shape of those different replay areas together with the hologram content itself which is spread across the different replay areas. If the marker also includes a surface hologram, then that is preferably aligned with the junctions between the replay areas. Preferably one volume hologram replay frequency is in the visible spectrum and the other is in the invisible part of the spectrum (IR or UV).Type: ApplicationFiled: September 3, 2010Publication date: September 5, 2013Applicant: De Montfort UniversityInventors: Stephen Christopher Brown, Steven L. Patent number: 8234996Abstract: The sort station system includes at least one outer support member and an elongated inner member. The at least one outer support member defines a channel along a first longitudinal axis thereof, and the elongated inner member is slideably disposed within the at least one outer support member such that: (A) a first status is indicated by the at least one outer support member being disposed at a first position relative to an end of the channel and (B) a second status is indicated by the end of the elongated inner member being disposed at a second position relative to the end of the channel. The first position and the second position are spaced apart axially from each other.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2008Date of Patent: August 7, 2012Assignee: United Parcel Service of America, Inc.Inventor: Steven L. Patent number: 8204243Abstract: A vehicle enunciator includes a storage device having sound data, a vehicle speed portion, an accelerator portion, and at least one speaker. The vehicle enunciator may be configured or attached to a vehicle, such as an electric car. The vehicle speed portion detects the speed of a vehicle, while the accelerator portion detects the position of the accelerator pedal of the vehicle. Using the outputs from the vehicle speed portion and accelerator portion, the sound data from the storage device is adjusted with regards to frequency and amplitude, respectively. At least one speaker then produces sound based upon the adjusted sound data.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 2007Date of Patent: June 19, 2012Inventor: Steven L. Smith

Publication number: 20120069698Abstract: A mixer for mixing immiscible fluids includes a mixer housing defining a flow passage therethrough from a first fluid inlet to an outlet thereof. An upstream portion of the flow passage defines a main longitudinal axis. A second fluid inlet is provided downstream of the first fluid inlet in fluid communication with the upstream portion of the flow passage. The second fluid inlet is offset with respect to the main longitudinal axis of the flow passage to introduce fluid along a path that is offset with respect to the main longitudinal axis for inducing swirl on fluids introduced at the first and second fluid inlets. In certain embodiments, a mixer section is included having a flow constriction defined in a downstream portion of the flow passage with a flow area smaller than that of the upstream portion of the flow passage for enhancing turbulent mixing of fluids therein.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 17, 2010Publication date: March 22, 2012Applicant: Delavan IncInventors: Spencer D. Patent number: 7632367Abstract: An apparatus and method of using same is provided which includes the use of an apparatus configured to scan and apply labels to parcels moving along a conveyor belt. The apparatus of the present invention includes first and second adjacent conveyors positioned with a gap there between, the gap being sufficiently narrow to allow passage of parcels from the first conveyor to the second conveyor. Parcels crossing the gap are exposed to a reading device having a reading axis passing upwardly through the gap to read indicia. The labels, which are scanned and decoded, provide information which is subsequently sent to a printing device which prints a “second” label which is blown or otherwise transferred to a second side of the parcel. The parcel then exits the second conveyor to be sorted downstream by use of the second label.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 2005Date of Patent: December 15, 2009Assignee: United Parcel Service of America, Inc.Inventor: Steven L.
