Patent number: 9349063Abstract: A system and method for collecting and managing information taken from tokens, like credit cards and gift cards, includes a portable computing device (PCD). The PCD may support a token recognizer that may comprise hardware and/or software that may reside in memory of the PCD. The token recognizer may work in combination with a camera. The token recognizer may comprise a broad recognizer module and an optical character recognition (“OCR”) module. The camera of the PCD may capture images of one or more physical tokens. These captured images of the physical tokens may be processed by the token recognizer so that digital images as well as data provided by the physical tokens may be maintained in memory of the PCD for later presentation to the user. These later presentations on the PCD may be used for account management and for conducting transactions, such as making payment at a point-of-sale (POS) terminal.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2011Date of Patent: May 24, 2016Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Steven M. Smith, Robert L. Dessert

Patent number: 9336519Abstract: A method for determining an appropriate redemption presentation for a virtual token associated with a stored value account is disclosed. The method may include receiving a request for presenting a redemption presentation of a virtual token and obtaining a merchant identifier associated with the request. The method may further include determining if the request is for one of an on-line transaction and a transaction with a point-of-sale terminal, and if the request is for a transaction with a point-of-sale terminal, then searching a database using the merchant identifier to find one or more redemption presentations of virtual token preferred by a merchant. Subsequently, the one or more redemption presentations of the virtual token may be transmitted over a computer network to a client device.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2010Date of Patent: May 10, 2016Assignee: QUALCOM IncorporatedInventors: Frank T. Young, Robert L. Dessert, Ben D. Ackerman, Gwenael B. Delaine, Lindsey K. Dorman, Eric R. Kraar, Aidoo Osei, Kyle Cochran, Steven M. Smith

Publication number: 20120084068Abstract: A computing device simulates a test system by defining parameter values to be used to populate certain modeling formulas defining the test system. The defined parameter values correspond to one of the many points defining a domain in which the test system is to be simulated. The simulation iteratively solves the modeling formulas for each unit of the test system model space for each point in the domain in which the test system is simulated. Results for the subjects of interest are calculated at each iteration using the populated modeling formulas. A variance of the subjects of interest is also calculated at each iteration using a correlation coefficient obtained for the subjects of interest. The iterations of defining the parameter values and calculating the value and variance of the subjects of interest in the test system model space continues until all points in the domain have been simulated.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 30, 2010Publication date: April 5, 2012Applicant: University of Utah Research FoundationInventors: Steven M. Patent number: 7729106Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided for removing smudges (506, 706, 806, 906) including oils and dust from portable electronic displays. The apparatus comprises a display device (110, 150, 500, 700, 800, 900, 1000) positioned within a housing (102, 104, 808), comprising a transparent cover (302, 502, 702, 802, 902, 1002) having a surface (508, 908) viewable through an opening in the housing (102, 104, 808) and a susceptibility to receiving contaminants (506, 706, 806, 906). A vibration device (504, 704, 804, 904, 1004) is positioned against the transparent cover (302, 502, 702, 802, 902, 1002) to provide motion (510) in a direction parallel to the surface, thereby causing the contaminants to move (708) across the surface (508, 908). The contaminants (506, 706, 806, 906) may then be hidden by the housing (102, 104, 808) or ejected by a motion (912) perpendicular to the surface by another vibrating device (911).Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 2007Date of Patent: June 1, 2010Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: John J. D'Urso, Steven M. Smith, Steven A. Voight, Steve X. Dai
