Patent number: 8064953Abstract: Methods and apparatus for distributing power and data to devices coupled to the human body are described. The human body is used as a conductive medium, e.g., a bus, over which power and/or data is distributed. Power is distributed by coupling a power source to the human body via a first set of electrodes. One or more devices to be powered, e.g., peripheral devices, are also coupled to the human body via additional sets of electrodes. The devices may be, e.g., a speaker, display, watch, keyboard, etc. A pulsed DC signal or AC signal may be used as the power source. By using multiple power supply signals of differing frequencies, different devices can be selectively 15 powered. For example, a 100 Hz signal may be used to power a first device while a 150 Hz signal may be used to power a second device. Digital data and/or other information signals, e.g., audio signals, can be modulated on the power signal using frequency and/or amplitude modulation techniques.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 2009Date of Patent: November 22, 2011Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Lyndsay Williams, William Vablais, Steven N. Patent number: 7982149Abstract: Mechanical architecture for providing maximum viewing area on key button tops of keys for a user input device. The viewing area is for the display of information on the key buttons, and also includes tactile feedback similar to standard laptop keyboards, all using low cost manufacturing methods such as injection molding. The architecture optimizes an aperture through the core of the key switch assembly in order to project an image through the aperture and onto the display area of the key button. The architecture relocates in at least one embodiment the tactile feedback mechanism (e.g., dome assembly) out from underneath the key button to the perimeter or side of the key switch assembly. The architecture finds particular application to input devices such as keyboards, game pods, data entry device, etc., that operate in combination with an optical surface (e.g., wedge lens).Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2008Date of Patent: July 19, 2011Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Glen C. Publication number: 20110069179Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for coordinating different image capture devices at an event so that images captured by the different devices may form a cohesive and consistent image set. The system includes a group of image capture devices, referred to herein as an event capture group, wirelessly communicating with a remote server. The image capture devices in an event capture group may consist of still image cameras, video recorders, mobile phones and other devices capable of capturing images. The server coordinates the devices in a group before images are taken, so that the resultant images from the different devices are consistent with each other and may be aggregated into a single, cohesive image set. Images from different devices in the group may be uploaded during an event and organized on a remote database into the image set which may be viewed during or after the event.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 24, 2009Publication date: March 24, 2011Applicant: MICROSOFT CORPORATIONInventors: Steven N. Publication number: 20100317332Abstract: A mobile device such as a cell phone is used to remotely control an electronic appliance such as a television or personal computer. In a setup phase, the mobile device captures an image of the electronic appliance and identifies and stores scale-invariant features of the image. A user interface configuration such as a virtual keypad configuration, and a communication protocol, can be associated with the stored data. Subsequently, in an implementation phase, another image of the electronic appliance is captured and compared to the stored features in a library to identify a match. In response, the associated user interface configuration and communication protocol are implemented to control the electronic appliance. In a polling and reply process, the mobile device captures a picture of a display of the electronic device and compares it to image data which is transmitted by the electronic appliance.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 12, 2009Publication date: December 16, 2010Inventors: Steven N. Publication number: 20100313150Abstract: The claimed subject matter relates to a display that is physically separable and to an associated architecture that can facilitate data mobility or collaboration in connection with the separable display. In particular, the separable display can be configured as an apparent unitary or singular UI for an associated multi-node computer, yet for which portion of the separable display can be physically decoupled. The multi-node computer can include a set of computing nodes, each of which can potentially operate autonomously, yet also in unison with other nodes to form a collective multiprocessor computing platform. Moreover, each of the computing nodes can be embedded in and distributed throughout the separable display. Accordingly, when a portion of the separable display is decoupled from a remainder of the separable display, both the portion and the remainder can include some subset of the computing nodes, and can therefore maintain the UI.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 3, 2009Publication date: December 9, 2010Applicant: MICROSOFT CORPORATIONInventors: Meredith J. Morris, Steven N. Bathiche, Stephen Edward Hodges, Ian C. LeGrow, Victor Kevin Russ, Ian M. Sands, William J. Westerinen, John Christopher Whytock, Andrew D. Patent number: 7791598Abstract: A novel hybrid pointing device combines elements of both a digital pen and a mouse, to collect the advantages of both types of devices in a single user input device. The hybrid input pointing device includes both a digital pen and a cradle. The cradle has a docking bay in which the digital pen can be docked, with an unobstructed path between the electromagnetic tracking signal receptor and a tracking surface on which the cradle is disposed. The electromagnetic signal receptor is enabled to receive tracking signals reflected off the tracking surface from an electromagnetic signal emitter. Information based on the reflected signal may be communicated to a computing device. A user can thereby use the digital pen in a pen-like user scenario, or dock the digital pen in the mouse-like cradle and use the combined device in a mouse-like user scenario.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 2007Date of Patent: September 7, 2010Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventor: Steven N. Patent number: 7714840Abstract: A method and system for electronically scrolling a document with a data processing apparatus uses an input device, e.g., a mouse, to permit position based scrolling without first accessing a scroll bar or other scrolling functionality element. In a page positional scrolling (PPS) mode useful for scrolling short distances, a displayed document is scrolled one pixel per one pixel of motion of the mouse. In a second mode (document positional scrolling—DPS), the document is scrolled a distance per pixel of mouse movement corresponding to the ratio of the document length (or width) to the page length (or width). In a further embodiment (smoothed document positional scrolling—SDPS), as the mouse is moved away from a starting position the system begins scrolling in PPS, transitions smoothly from PPS to DPS, and then continues to scroll in DPS.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2005Date of Patent: May 11, 2010Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Kenneth P.
