Patent number: 8756037Abstract: A computational optimization process uses the variable stiffness performance of composite laminates attributed to steered fiber to guide the design of stream functions describing the fibers to build it. This design process combines a finite element-based analysis tool, failure criteria and geometry optimization to determine steered angles associated with stream functions by an optimization program to meet target performance requirements, e.g., load condition(s), and failure criteria for quasi-static or dynamic events. The fiber angle distribution and thickness buildup are computed based on the stream function. The simulated structure is analyzed using finite element analysis. The disclosed process allows the designer to impose manufacturing constraints such as fiber steering radius.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2011Date of Patent: June 17, 2014Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Mostafa Rassaian, Matthew Todd Grimshaw, Thomas A. Publication number: 20080222515Abstract: Associating schema elements or types declared in an XML document with elements declared in another XML document. An annotation schema is defined in a first document. At least a portion of the schema declared in the original document is identified in the annotation schema of the first document. Usage properties in the annotation schema are declared for the identified portion of the schema in the original document. The declared usage properties provide additional utilities of the identified portion of the schema. Publication number: 20060176915Abstract: A single-mode grating-outcoupled surface emitting (GSE) semiconductor laser architecture is provided. This architecture enables high speed modulation of the GSE laser, which is accomplished by only varying the relative phase of counter propagating waves in the outcoupler grating region of the lasing cavity.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 8, 2005Publication date: August 10, 2006Applicant: Photodigm, Inc.Inventors: Gary Evans, Taha Masood, Steven Patterson, Nuditha Amarasinghe, Jerome Butler

Publication number: 20060140237Abstract: An improved grating-outcoupled surface-emitting semiconductor laser architecture is provided. A second-order grating is placed between two distributed Bragg reflector gratings. The period of the second order grating is positively or negatively detuned from the distributed Bragg reflector selected optical wavelength at which the laser operates. Detuning of the second-order grating towards shorter or longer wavelengths allows kink-free, linear LI curves light output versus forward current) for grating-outcoupled surface-emitting lasers. Due to the detuning of the outcoupler grating, the outcoupled radiation emits two beams that deviate slightly from the normal axis. A design point may then be chosen where the power coutcoupled by symmetric and antisymmetric modes cross and where the outcoupled power is independent of the phase variation.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 23, 2004Publication date: June 29, 2006Applicant: Photodigm, Inc.Inventors: Nuditha Amarasinghe, Taha Masood, Steven Patterson, Gary Evans

Publication number: 20050140983Abstract: Thermal expansion characteristics of test materials of ultra-low thermal expansion material are measured with a test beam that is split into a test material-measuring portion and an instrument-measuring portion. Both measuring portions propagate through common portions of a test arm. The test material-measuring portion encounters a test material, but the instrument-measuring portion does not. Thermal expansion characteristics of the test material are measured to high accuracy by manipulating the measures to distinguish displacements associated with the test material from displacements associated with the instrument structure.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 27, 2004Publication date: June 30, 2005Inventors: Vivek Badami, Steven Patterson

Publication number: 20050085185Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting sounds which originate close to a site under study, while sharply attenuating sounds originating farther away. A reference transducer 40 is positioned as close as possible to the site under study. Three or more satellite transducers 38D-G are positioned on a circle 24 centered on the reference transducer, such that they divide the circle into equal arcs. The average signal of the satellite transducers, or a portion thereof, is subtracted from the signal of the reference transducer. The resulting difference signal may be amplified and/or filtered prior to being transduced to sound by speakers. Subtraction of the signals results in a focusing effect. Sounds which originate close to the reference transducer are preserved, while those which originate farther away are sharply attenuated. The focusing effect increases modestly with frequency.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 6, 2003Publication date: April 21, 2005Inventor: Steven Patterson
