  • Publication number: 20100241618
Abstract: A computer system and methods for restoring data from a copy of a database file. The method includes receiving a request to restore an item from the copy of the database file. The item includes a file and associated context information describing the file in a first intranet portal application environment. The method further includes retrieving a schema including the item from the copy of the database file and generating an item file comprising a copy of the file. The item file is independent of the context information. The method further includes generating a metadata file based on the context information, associating the metadata file with the item file, storing the item file and associated metadata file in a file system, and restoring the item to a second intranet portal application or to a third application via the file system.

  • Patent number: 7797281
Abstract: A system and method for performing a granular restore of data objects from a directory service is disclosed. In one embodiment, at the time a backup of the directory services database is performed, a metadata file with index values for some data objects is created. The metadata file may include an index of the name and an object identifier for each included data object. During granular restore of one or more data objects selected for restoration, the corresponding object identifier is retrieved from the metadata file using the name of the data object. The object identifier is then used to restore the data object in the directory service.

  • Patent number: 7743226
Abstract: A system and method for mail server backup. In one embodiment, the method may comprise storing one or more messages on a mail server, where each message is associated with an index time. The method may then perform a full backup by storing each message and a backup time associated with the full backup on a backup medium, and perform a partial backup by storing selected messages on the backup medium dependent upon a difference between the index time associated with each message and the backup time. In one embodiment the partial backup may be performed by backing up each message that includes an index time that is dated after the backup time. In a further embodiment, each message on the mail server is contained in a mail folder object, and storing the backup time may comprise modifying a data member of the mail folder object.

  • Publication number: 20100082553
Abstract: A mechanism to selectively restore a version of an application object stored in a monolithic backup of a database, while maintaining hierarchical and other metadata relationships of the restored portion of the database, is provided. Embodiments of the present invention provide a method, system and computer-readable storage medium that provide a mechanism for receiving a request to restore a version of a selected object from among a plurality of backed up objects in a database backup, locating information associated with the selected object in the backup, and restoring the version of the selected object to a target storage area using information associated with the selected object. Aspects of the present invention use database table metadata gathered from the backed up database at the time the backup was created in order to locate the information associated with the selected object.

  • Publication number: 20100082552
Abstract: A mechanism to selectively restore portions of a monolithically backed up database, while maintaining security relationships associated with the restored portions of the database is provided. Embodiments of the present invention provide a method, system and computer-readable storage medium for receiving a request to restore a selected object from among a plurality of backed up objects in a database backup, accessing security-related information associated with the selected object in the database backup, restoring the selected object using the information associated with the selected object in a target area, and associating elements of the security-related information with the restored selected object.

  • Patent number: 7672934
Abstract: Various embodiments of a method and system for accessing an instance of a database file previously created by a secured RDBMS are disclosed. The secured RDBMS is not used to reconstruct tables and records from an unmounted backed up copy of a database file. During backup, a schema file including table and index information is stored along with the database file. During a subsequent restore operation, the schema file may be read for efficiently reconstructing objects from the database file, without having to reload or reinstall the secured RDBMS. For restoring or comparing objects from the backed up database file, a stored procedure in the secured RDBMS may be called.

  • Patent number: 7552358
Abstract: A method for efficient backup and restore using metadata mapping comprises maintaining a first backup aggregation associated with a primary data object of a primary host at a secondary host, wherein the first backup aggregation includes a first backup version of the primary data object stored within a secondary data object at the secondary host. The method further comprises generating a second backup aggregation, wherein the second backup aggregation includes a second backup version of the primary data object and a backup metadata object corresponding to the secondary data object. The backup metadata object includes a pointer to the second backup version. The method may further comprise restoring the secondary data object, wherein said restoring comprises using the pointer to access the second backup version of the primary data object to restore at least a portion of the secondary data object.

  • Patent number: 7251680
Abstract: A system and method for single instance backup. In one embodiment, a method may comprise storing a plurality of duplicate messages on a mail server, where each of the messages includes a copy of an attachment, and storing a copy of each of the plurality of duplicate messages and one or more copies of the attachment to a backup medium, where the number of copies of the attachment stored on the backup medium is less than the number of duplicate messages stored on the backup medium. For example, only a single copy of the attachment may be stored on the backup medium. In one embodiment storing a copy of each of the plurality of duplicate messages and one or more copies of the attachment may comprise extracting metadata from each of the messages, storing the metadata in an attachment index, storing the metadata with each message on the backup medium, and storing the metadata with the copies of the attachment on the backup medium.
