Patent number: 10378303Abstract: A downhole tool, including at least one body defining a surface, the at least one body having a plurality of cavities sealed from an outside of the at least one body by the surface. A plurality of the plurality of cavities being in fluidic communication with others of the plurality of cavities through a plurality of openings. A method of forming a downhole tool.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 2015Date of Patent: August 13, 2019Assignee: BAKER HUGHES, A GE COMPANY, LLCInventors: Steven R. Hayter, Daniel A. Gilmour

Patent number: 10066452Abstract: A flexible collet on a subterranean tool has sacrificial soft components to protect seal bores through which the collets have to compress to get through. The sacrificial components can be replaced when the tool is removed to the surface. In one embodiment, threaded fasteners are used alone or with washers for height adjustment such that the heads of the fasteners which are softer than the seal bore material ride on the seal bore and take the wear. The tool can ultimately be used to latch into shifting sleeves to move such sleeves to open or close wall ports. Alternatively axial ridges with beveled profile ends can be used or rolling members such as wheels or balls can be used to keep sharp edges off the seal bore. EDM method can be used to create multiple fingers with an axial ridge profile and rounded end transitions.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 2014Date of Patent: September 4, 2018Assignee: Baker Hughes, a GE company, LLCInventors: Travis E. Cochran, Steven R. Hayter

Patent number: 9546535Abstract: A packer plug includes a retractable latch having at least one radially compressible finger having threads on an exterior surface, and a housing operatively arranged to move the at least one radially compressible finger inwardly during longitudinal movement of the housing in an uphole direction.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 2014Date of Patent: January 17, 2017Assignee: BAKER HUGHES INCORPORATEDInventors: Steven R. Hayter, Benjamin J. Farrar, Toby Lee Cochran

Patent number: 9534462Abstract: Opposed cones for slips on a packer have an annular undercut in general alignment with the end of the cone that has the slip ramp. The undercut faces the mandrel on which the cones can be driven together to radially extend the slips. A high modulus insert sleeve is interference fitted to the undercut. This results in the cone exterior surface being in hoop stress tension before the slips are set. Once the slips are set and a reaction load comes radially back from the surrounding tubular into which the slips have extended there is a tendency for the reaction force to put the exterior surface of the cones into compressive hoop stress. The initial tensile hoop stress from the sleeve placement acts to at least in part offset the reaction force tending to create compressive hoop stress. The net loading and deflection of the mandrel is minimized.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2014Date of Patent: January 3, 2017Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventor: Steven R. Hayter

Patent number: 8905149Abstract: Expandable seals have one or more conforming ribs to facilitate creation of a seal to a sealing surface disposed in the well. The conforming ribs comprise a core of material either capped, partially covered by, or entirely covered by a ring. The ring can be formed of a metal that is softer than the metallic core material of each rib. Suitable metals forming the rings include copper formed by metal spun methods. Disposed adjacent to the rings are one or more sealing elements. By moving the rings into the sealing surface during expansion of the expandable seals, the rings close the extrusion gaps between the internal surface of the casing and the expanded tubular member ribs. The rings better conform to the sealing surface of the casing, thereby facilitating the creation of the seal between this sealing surface and each of the sealing elements.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 2011Date of Patent: December 9, 2014Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: William M. Bailey, Steven R. Hayter

Patent number: 8893798Abstract: A housing can be mounted adjacent an isolation valve and after a fixed number of on and off pressure cycles allow a spring to push an actuator to operate the valve to an open position. The actuator, can be reset with a tool run into the module to move the actuator back against a power spring and hold that spring force until the pressure cycling begins again. The preferred application is for a formation isolation ball valve but other valves, such as sliding sleeves, or other types of downhole tools can be actuated with the module that permits a retrofit of a hydraulic operation to a heretofore purely mechanically actuated tool. The actuation force to initially open is boosted by a secondary potential energy source that is unlocked to give an initial boost force to the indexing spring that is part of a j-slot actuation mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2010Date of Patent: November 25, 2014Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Steven R. Hayter, Brad R. Pickle, Antonio D. Lazo

Patent number: 8544548Abstract: An apparatus for controlling flow of a fluid into a wellbore tubular may include a flow control device controlling the flow of the fluid; and a disintegrating element associated with the flow control device. The flow control device may be actuated when the disintegrating element disintegrates when exposed to the flowing fluid. The disintegrating element may disintegrate upon exposure to water in the fluid. A method for producing fluid from a subterranean formation includes: configuring an element to disintegrate when exposed to a selected fluid; positioning the element in a wellbore; and actuating a flow control device using the element. The element may disintegrate when exposed to water. Actuating the flow control device may restrict a flow of fluid into a wellbore tubular.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2007Date of Patent: October 1, 2013Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Martin P. Coronado, Steven R. Hayter

Patent number: 8469097Abstract: A tubular cutter that cuts with extendable and rotating blades has its depth of cut limited upon getting through the tubular to be cut. In a preferred embodiment, the tubular has a loosely mounted member exterior thereto to be engaged by the rotating cutters. When such engagement happens the effect is that the loosely mounted member serves as a cover to the cutters to prevent them from cutting other structures beyond the tubular to be cut. The loosely mounted member is grabbed by the rotating blades for tandem rotation this preventing further cutting action. The load on the mill drops noticeably so that surface personnel have a signal to stop hydraulic pressure to the drive mechanism to allow the blades to retract and the cutter to be removed.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 2009Date of Patent: June 25, 2013Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Travis E. Cochran, Steven R. Hayter, Steve Rosenblatt
