  • Patent number: 7399275
Abstract: An otoscope permitting examination of a patient's ear is defined by an instrument head including a proximal end and a distal insertion portion that is insertable into the ear. The otoscope includes an imaging lens train disposed within the instrument head, wherein each of the imaging lens train, an eyepiece and a distal opening of said insertion portion are aligned along an optical axis. The otoscope further includes a focusing mechanism for selectively moving at least one of the imaging lens train and the optics contained within the eyepiece relative to one another along the optical axis. The imaging lens train and the optics in the eyepiece define an optical system such that an entrance pupil is substantially located in the distal insertion portion of the instrument head, thereby enabling the entire tympanic membrane to be viewed at once by the user.

  • Patent number: 6939006
Abstract: The invention is a low cost, low input power eye viewing device well suited for viewing wide field retinal images through an undilated pupil. Included in the device are a converging light illumination system and an aperture stop. The converging light illumination system provides ease of entry of light rays into an eye, wide field retinal illumination, reduced glare and reduced power consumption. The aperture stop blocks unwanted received glare light not forming part of the retinal image. The device is made especially well suited for retinal viewing through an undilated pupil if the aperture is sized in accordance with the diameter of an undilated pupil.

  • Patent number: 6830347
Abstract: The invention is a hand-held eye viewing device adapted to be readily positioned in an operative radial displacement, angular orientation and axial standoff position relative to an eye. The eye viewing device includes an eye cup extending from a patient end of the device having a patient end adapted to be received at a patient's eye orbit. By allowing the eye viewing device to be stabilized against an eye orbit the eye cup eases the task of maintaining an operative position once an operative position has been achieved.

  • Publication number: 20030063386
Abstract: The invention is a hand-held eye viewing device adapted to be readily positioned in an operative radial displacement, angular orientation and axial standoff position relative to an eye. The eye viewing device includes an eye cup extending from a patient end of the device having a patient end adapted to be received at a patient's eye orbit. An outer diameter of a patient end of the eye cup is sized to correspond to a patient eye orbit such that a viewing axis is substantially centered on patient's pupil when the eye cup is received at an eye orbit. The eye cup is preferably made deformable so that patient comfort is improved and further so that contact of the eye cup with an eye orbit alerts a physician that the device is approaching an operative axial standoff position.

  • Patent number: 6485451
Abstract: A body cavity irrigation system includes a housing having at least one interior chamber which is connectable to a faucet or other continuous fluid supply which delivers liquid under pressure through an inlet port. A discharge port of the housing is fluidly interconnected to an irrigation syringe having an actuable valve to control the dispensing of liquid from the housing to a body cavity through a discharge opening under controlled pressure. The liquid being dispensed can be monitored to ensure that the liquid is at an preferred temperature for effectively cleaning the body cavity without patient discomfort, the housing including an antiscald valve which prevents liquid above a predetermined temperature from being dispensed and in which at least one indicator indicates to the user that the liquid is above a second predetermined temperature whereby the first and second temperatures define a suitable temperature range.
