  • Patent number: 6751068
Abstract: An actuator assembly is provided for a computer disc drive. The actuator assembly includes an actuator body that supports a shell head support arm and/or a shell coil yoke. The coil yoke supports the coil of the VCM. The actuator body pivots about a pivot axis and is attached to the cartridge bearing assembly disposed within an inner hollow of the actuator body. The head support arm is a shell having a core, a first surface and a second surface. The first surface of the head support arm is concave and the second surface of the head support arm is convex. The head support arm is connected to the actuator body at a proximal end. At a distal end of the head support arm, there is a flat portion with a swage hole for connection of the flexure assembly.

  • Patent number: 6687095
Abstract: An actuator arm for a rotary actuator assembly of a disc drive comprises a substantially planar sheet of pliable material defining a longitudinal actuator arm having longitudinal edges, a distal end supporting the transducer, a proximal end supporting an actuator coil. Strut means integral with the sheet extends substantially normal to the plane of the sheet along at least a portion of at least one longitudinal edge and the proximal end of the arm to provide rigidity to at least a portion of the arm. In one embodiment, an integral strut portion defines a support for the actuator coil. In another embodiment, integral strut portions extend along opposite longitudinal edges to a location proximal the distal end to define a rigid portion between the strut portions and a flexible suspension region distal to the rigid portion.

  • Patent number: 6469872
Abstract: A lightweight actuator for use in a disc drive where the actuator body, yoke and actuator arms are molded as a unitary article. The actuator is preferably molded from a composite material chosen on the basis that its dynamic characteristics are comparable to the characteristics exhibited by materials conventionally used for making actuators. In addition, the actuator facilitates the formation of zero insertion force connection features at the actuator arms for coupling with the respective suspensions. The present invention thus allows for the application of improved connection methods at lower cost.

  • Patent number: 6317296
Abstract: A magnetic parking device for retaining an actuator in a disk drive over a landing zone. A magnetically permeable capture member is provided on the drive actuator and a magnetic parking member for capturing and magnetically retaining the capture member to park the transducer is provided adjacent the drive actuator. The magnetic parking member includes a permanent magnet and a magnetic field containing member having a slot (or air gap) formed therein. The magnetic field containing member and permanent magnet form a magnetic circuit with a magnetic flux with the slot in the magnetic field containing member allowing a portion of the magnetic flux to extend beyond the physical confines of the magnetic field containing member to provide a capture region for the capture member.

  • Patent number: 5477401
Abstract: An apparatus for a disk drive having at least one disk mounted in a housing having a controlled environment defined by the housing. Such a disk drive generally includes, within the controlled environment, one or more transducers for reading information from and writing information to the disk, and at least one actuator for selectively positioning the transducers with respect to the disks. Each actuator includes at least one magnet for providing a magnetic field and an actuator coil, mounted on the actuator, arranged so that a current in said coil creates a force to pivot the actuator. The apparatus comprises a magnet shield encasing each such magnet for preventing matter, generated during the decomposition of said magnet over a period of time, from interfering with the operation of the disk drive.
